@utee94 I'm in San Antonio for the next few days and we'll probably hit up Whataburger while I'm here... What's the go-to order?

I think some of you have an awfully high ceiling when it comes to a $15 meal.

I know where to go around here for a pretty solid ~$15 meal.  These days it would often be burgers, but I can get a pretty good burrito for under $15 at a place I like.  Comes with beans, rice, guac, salsa ...  $12, no drink.  I bring it home.  A key of course is knowing the area and the options.  I know when I'm in a tourist area I'm probably going to get indifferent food, mostly from large chains.

The Italian place I like a lot has lunch specials around $17, really good, comes with a salad.  Farm Burger used to have "burger and a beer" for $10, it's now $12.50 though.  Portillo's seemed to be centered on their Philly sandwich, so I ordered that.  I ate it, wasn't overly impressed.  I can get a solid one at this place near us, which also is in the OK range, as in pretty good, for $10.

Obviously prices have jumped since 2020 or so.  We had a long stretch of low inflation post -2010.  Restaurants have suffered in the main.  Probably my favorite lunch near us is this place, Thali chicken is $17, and it's a lot of food.  We sit outside, both of us like have small portions of different tastes.

I wonder how good a hotdog can be.  Like what would you have to do to make an elite dog, far beyond the Hebrews National or Nathan's ones you get at the grocery store?
Not talking about bun quality or toppings, but the actual frankfurter itself.

Personally, I don't like the thick, 1-lb dogs, as it's just too much of that type of meat for me.  I can definitely see the quality difference of the ones I mentioned vs cheaper ones like Bar S or others.  But what would a dog a step above the HN or Nathan's be?
Vienna beef hot dogs are the gold standard.

I like bacon so I get the #5 bacon cheeseburger, add grilled onions and grilled jalapenos.

The patty melt is also pretty darn tasty.

Of course while you're in SA you should also grab some Tex-Mex, I don't know the names of any of the really good places but just ask the locals and they'll know.

Right.  But what makes it so?
Taste alone is not the only key. Texture and consistency are unmatched qualities.
