I'll report back, but we're there with "family", so my indepdence is ... dependent.

Palm Springs we're on our own.  I don't even see a Mexican place near there.

Authentic Mexican in San Diego:

For friends visiting San Diego I always tell them if you want fancy touristy Mexican fare, do Miguel's. If you want the actual taste/dining experience of Tijuana, do Roberto's.
