I wondered the same thing after seeing the score, stats, and lack of turnovers. Initially I was predisposed to just blame MSU's offense but they got 400 yards. Yardage wasn't the problem.
Tis the MSU way. Play weird, ugly games, Win toss ups with good teams sometimes, lose to bad ones sometimes.

Ugh, such a cavalcade of stupid, that I had forgotten that we tried to sub during our hurry up final drive, which of course allowed the refs to (rightfully) stand over the ball as the clock ran and allow ASU to substitute.  Not even sure they needed to, we just swapped RBs, but it was smart of them to do so either way, because the refs then had to stand over the ball to allow them to do so.

The announcers kept saying the clock started before the ball was set for play, but they were wrong, they were giving ASU the chance to substitute, because MSU had

Refs screwed the Huskers on Colorado's final drive by not allowing the Husker defense to sub after the Buffs subbed on offense, didn't stand over the ball to allow clock to run, allowed the Buffs to hike the ball when the Husker defense was not set allowing an large gain, then flagging the Huskers for illegal sub that was declined, but stopped the clock until the next offensive snap

as I watched it live I thought it was a huge mistake by the Husker coaches - huge mistake by the refs

not that it would have saved the game for Nebraska, but it sure helped the Buffs final drive for a TD

*flashes back to memories of Washington St getting a 5th down and scoring a a TD and a clear as day missed offsides call against Oregon in 2015 where we threw a pick, essentially costing us a chance at a win*

Yeah, we don't either.

Flashback to OU at Oregon in 2006.  Oregon tries onside kick late in the game.  OU player recovers it, hands it to the official, and another official signals that Oregon gets the ball.  Incomprehensibly, the replay official agrees with the second officlal, so Oregon gets the ball and drives--with the help of two more bad calls--to the winning TD.

Ugh, and it was 1st down, so if they weren't sure, Lewerke could have spiked it.  Even though the clock isn't running, that at least gives you time to decide by resetting the play clock.  I'm constantly finding more ways that it was so dumb.

I'm missing the significance of the GRR and that symbol

He's harkening back to the UW-ASU ref controversy in Tempe. I can't remember the details with that last second FG attempt, just that it was pretty bad. This may be different, though, seeing as -- on MSU's final drive -- ASU had a legitimate ref gripe for the PI that put MSU in FG position in the first place. Of course, I'm not arguing for fixing bad reffing with bad reffing. Just specifying that the bad reffing came close to equal and opposite.
