Reports: 2026 and beyond playoff 14 or 16 teams
« on: February 16, 2025, 11:40:57 PM »
SEC and B1G officially have deciding power on playoff format going forward.

14 team:  4 guaranteed spots go to SEC and B1G
2 guaranteed spots go to XII and ACC
1 guaranteed spot to sacrificial lamb "other" conf champ
last spot goes to ND if it qualifies or an at-large team (probably from SEC/B1G)
.
16 team:  4 for SEC/B1G, 2 for XII/ACC, 1 for "others", 3 for ND/at-large
.
Only plus to this is freeing up programs to schedule tough OOC games, as you merely need to finish in top-4 of your conference
.
Josh Pate's idea is to replace traditional CCG weekend with the top 2 seeds of each conf having the week off, and doubling up the football, having 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 in each P4 conference, in order to identify the top 4 going to CFP.
.
I'd also specify no byes, as that proved to be worthless this year, but with 14 that's built-in.  Just go to 16 and have 2 rounds of home-field games @ better seed.

Ugh.

^^^ That doesn't add much to the conversation, but it's the best I've got.

Yeah at this point I just don't really have anything to say about it, that we haven't already said a million times.

I'll wait and see, like I did on the 4 team and 12 team playoffs

4 was not bad, 12 felt like about 4 too many.

2 was even better, imo.

And the old bowl system was even better than that.

Based on the inverse relationship between my preference and implementation, I project we'll be at a 130 team playoff in no time.

I don't really need to wait and see.  The trend is apparent.

Old Bowls > BCS/Alliance > 4 team playoff > 12 team playoff.  We're going the wrong way.

Auto bids: participation trophy trash.

Nah I like the auto-bids.  Keeps the conference championship race more meaningful for the conferences not named SEC and B1G.

If auto bids are kept, then they need to stop ranking the teams.  I don't want to know that the 16th-ranked team is the 9th seed.  It makes me want to club baby seals.

Because South Carolina and Illinois are definitely title contenders.

If you do this, get rid of conference championships, and get rid of at larges

Top 2 in the Big Ten and SEC are in, Winner of the ACC and Big XII are in

CCG weekend, #6 plays at #3 and #5 plays at #4 in the Big Ten and SEC for the 3rd and 4th spots; #3 plays at #2 in the ACC and Big XII; and then the #4 Group of 5 champ plays at #1 and the #3 plays at #2.  That fills out the other 8 spots
