Maximium Number of Undefeated Teams at End of the Regular Season: 11
-(For now assuming only one per conference even though possibilities exist of more.) Down two this week with UConn and the last Conference USA undefeated team losing. That leaves the champ of each conference except Conference USA plus Notre Dame.
Team 2 Thoughts:
-The SEC had another strong week. Texas had an amazing comeback to take the overall #1 rankings. Additionally, Texas A&M defeated Arizona State, Tennessee beat Georgia Tech, Missouri won the rivalry game with Kansas, and Mississippi State demolished Minnesota. Oklahoma losing to Michigan was a bit of a surprise for the conference, but overall the SEC offices must be happy.
-If Ohio State hadn't collapsed at the end of the Texas game, the week would have been decent overall, but as it stands it was definitely a disappointing week for the conference. Ohio State losing to Texas was one thing, but Oregon losing to an Oklahoma State team who lost to Tulsa week 1 was surprising for a top team. Additionally, Washington had a close one with Utah State, Purdue lost to Wake Forest, Minnesota got killed by Mississippi State, and Illinois lost a close one to Duke. On the good side, Michigan won against a quality opponent, Indiana continues to roll, Penn State, Iowa, and USC stay ranked and winning, and Ohio State still has the best odds to win the national championship of anyone in the country.
-In the ACC, #7 Miami won 77-7 (note only because it seemed like a lot 7s). Ranked Louisville and SMU won against FCS teams. Pitt won against Big 12's UCF and Duke beat a decent Illinois.
-The ranked Big 12 teams all won, Oklahoma State got a signature win over Oregon, Utah won convincingly, and BYU won an early conference game with Arizona.
-Group of 6 CFP Race:
Boise State beat Memphis is a big game for the PAC-12. The Broncos lost to Oregon last week, but beating one of the American's top teams is a big deal as the overall start for the conference has been less than ideal.
The American, for its part, has 3 undefeated teams and South Florida won an early conference game against Army. It does remain early favorite in my mind for the playoff spot. It was hurt by Memphis losing, but helped a little UTSA beating the 3rd favorite in the PAC-12 in Texas State.
The Sun Belt's best result of the week was probably Appalachian State beating East Carolina.
UMass amazingly remains the last undefeated in the MAC, but Western Michigan might have benefited most from the weekend. A lot of people are going to give them credit for beating Michigan regardless of what the record says and Michigan beating Oklahoma a week afterwards helps a lot.
North Dakota State continues its great start to FBS by winning their first conference game against Air Force. They now are the favorite to win the Mountain West.
Conference USA no longer has any undefeated teams and likely needs a major out of conference win to get back in the CFP race.
Week 3 Thoughts:
-We have 12 games between undefeated teams.
Undefeated LSU at Undefeated Ole Miss: Unbelievable hype here after Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU. LSU comes in as 3 point favorites. Either winner will be one of favorites to win conference and certainly for the CFP.
Undefeated Houston at Undefeated Texas Tech (Friday): A major Big 12 of battle of ranked unbeaten Texas teams. Winner is set up nicely going forward.
Undefeated North Carolina at Clemson: Kind of an odd spot for the conference. Clemson has meant so much for the ACC over the past decade plus, but the conference is probably better if North Carolina wins this and raises North Carolina star with Belichick's a little. It would definitely got more notoriety than Clemson being so-so right now. Clemson is favored by a few.
Undefeated SMU at Louisville: A ranked battle in the ACC. These are the 2nd and 3rd favorite to win the conference. Winner will be 2nd favorite after Miami.
Miami (OH) at undefeated Cincinnati: A very long running series. This is the last scheduled game for now.
Undefeated Mississippi State at Undefeated South Carolina: South Carolina is a 4 point favorite. Winner starts 3-0.
Undefeated Florida at Undefeated Auburn: The Gators are 2.5 point favorites on the road. Winner will come out optimistic in SEC play.
Undefeated Michigan State at Undefeated Notre Dame: A long run series resuming, but Notre Dame tremendous favorites.
Undefeated BYU at Undefeated Colorado State: BYU are huge road favorites, but if Colorado State pulled this off, it would be huge for the PAC-12.
Undefeated New Mexico at Oklahoma: Oklahoma looking for a comeback after the Michigan game. New Mexico is 2nd favorite in the Mountain West.
Undefeated West Virginia at Undefeated Virginia: Virginia is a 10 point favorite in a battle of neighboring states and Big 12 vs. ACC.
Undefeated Colorado at Undefeated Northwestern: Returning hype with Sanders will take a bit of time, but a win here would do a lot. Northwestern is a 3.5 point favorite.
Undefeated Virginia Tech at Undefeated Maryland: Former ACC opponents match-up. Only a 3 point spread.
Undefeated James Madison at San Diego State: Favorite to win Sun Belt vs. 2nd favorite to win the PAC-12 with a close line.
