Remaining Undefeated Teams Before Week 2
« on: September 07, 2021, 12:37:02 AM »
This is the thread for people who love lists  For anyone new, basically what I’ll do is each week post the teams with their 1st loss and the remaining undefeated teams. As the season progresses, I’ll add a 1-loss team list and a winless team list and note potential bigger games for the various teams. We can see how this lists change through the year.

Also note: Every team to make the BCS National Championship Game/Bowl and the College Football Playoff except for 2007 LSU has finished with 0 or 1 losses. Every non-AQ/Group of 5 representative has finished with no more than 1 loss except for 2014 Boise State.

Conference changes this year:
-Our only changes this year are to add back in the teams that did not play last year. We should expect a lot more soon with the fallout from Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12.

Teams with first loss week 0:
Nebraska
Connecticut
Hawaii
New Mexico State

Teams with first loss week 1:
Minnesota
Boise State
East Carolina
Tulsa
South Florida
Bowling Green
UNLV
North Carolina
Duke
Old Dominion
Northwestern
Colorado State
Miami (OH)
Temple
Louisiana-Monroe
Stanford
Tulane
Western Michigan
Wisconsin
Georgia State
Rice
Fresno State
Navy
West Virginia
Indiana
Miami (FL)
Central Michigan
Louisiana Tech
Massachusetts
Louisiana-Lafayette
San Jose State
Ohio U.
Akron
Texas State
Houston
Oregon State
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida Atlantic
Illinois
Vanderbilt
Southern Mississippi
Washington
Kent State
Louisiana State
California
Arizona
Washington State
Florida State
Louisville

Maximum number of Undefeated Teams at the End of the Regular Season:
13: The 10 conference champs, plus Notre Dame, BYU and one of Liberty/Army

Teams with 1st loss:
Week 0 and 1: 41.53% (54 of 130)

Week 1 Thoughts:
College football is back!

-Top of the ACC suffered most as far a playoff contenders go with their top 3 ranked teams losing (plus Florida State who has the most potential to be back with talent), but Clemson will still almost certainly be in if wins rest of way.

-On the other side of the Georgia/Clemson game, the Georgia win will definitely be something the SEC points to if they are in contention for 2 teams at the end of the year. The SEC is definitely worth following for that.

-In the Big Ten west, my initial impression is that Iowa will be the team to beat. Wisconsin definitely still big threat though.

-Really bad week for American taken as a whole. Central Florida coming back vs. Boise State is big for winning NY6 over Mountain West and Cincinnati looked quite legit in their win, but both those teams are now on their way out. The only other 2 teams in the league undefeated after week 1 are Memphis and SMU. League positioned pretty well for another New Years 6, but week didn't help a lot and most likely candidates aren't teams the conference would now hope for.

-Maybe a sign that power is shifting a bit back to the south in the PAC-12 (at least a bit)? Oregon struggled some vs. Fresno State and Washington lost while ULCA beat LSU.

Week 2 Thoughts:
-We got a little spoiled this week with games Thursday through Monday. Next week we have a few on Friday and everything else on Saturday.
Games of note (all teams undefeated unless mentioned otherwise):
Kansas @ Coastal Carolina (Friday): Coastal Carolina was very much in the running for the Group of 5 conferences NY6 bowl spot last year. This is their only game vs. a team from a power 5 conference this year so if they want to be in the running, it would help to make it non-competitive for the Jayhawks.

Oregon @ Ohio State: This win would help the PAC-12 cause a lot even if Oregon doesn't finish unbeaten. A win keeps Ohio State one of top few in the country and helps Big Ten (but not to the same degree).
Iowa @ Iowa State: Iowa State was ranked 7th last week and Iowa looked very good against an decent Indiana team. Both could be relevant in their conference races and this game will say something for both conferences. This is one of the bigger one of these match-ups in awhile.

Washington (1-loss) @ Michigan: Less attention than Ohio State/Oregon, but another Big Ten vs. PAC-12 matchup.

Utah @ BYU: The Holy War might be halted a bit with a BYU transition to the Big 12 (although has not been every year since Utah went to PAC-12).
Stanford (1-loss) @ USC: Little early for this traditional match-up.

Rutgers @ Syracuse: Old Big East match-up.
(Note: As kind of an ode to how long I've been doing this list, the teams are in order of their conferences from around when I started. Anyone new to FBS after that is listed on the bottom.)

Remaining Undefeated Teams: ACC: 7, American: 4, Big 12: 9, Big Ten: 8, Conference USA: 9, MAC: 5, Mountain West: 6, PAC-12: 6, SEC: 12, Sun Belt: 6, independents: 4, total: 76

I've been watching this post of yours for years and I do appreciate it but honestly in the CFP era it is less relevant than it used to be.

I also enjoy this thread every year.  I appreciate all your work and the time you put into it.

As far as the Iowa-Iowa St matchup, the new AP rankings are out and both teams are now in the top 10 (ISU #9, Iowa #10).  I can't remember a time with both teams ranked this high.  This has to be the biggest game ever in the history of the series.
