Remaining Undefeated Teams After Week 1
« on: September 08, 2020, 12:20:34 AM »
This is the thread for people who love lists. For anyone new, basically what I’ll do is each week is post the teams with their 1st loss and the remaining undefeated teams. As the season progresses, I’ll probably add a 1-loss team list and a winless team list and note potential bigger games for the various teams. We can see how this lists change through the year. Traditionally, every BCS Championship/CFP team has been a team from a major conference with 0 or 1 losses and every non-AQ/G5 team into a major bowl has also had 0 or 1 loss. So far, both of these rules has only had a single exception (2-loss Boise State making it once and 2-loss LSU back in crazy 2007).

Changes this Year: Going into this year, the only change we were supposed to have was UConn moving from being a part of the American to an independent. The American, as such, was dropping to 11 teams. Obviously that is not what we have ended up with. We have the entire Big Ten, the PAC-12, the MAC, and the Mountain West at least delaying the season. We also have independents UConn, UMass, and New Mexico State plus Conference USA member Old Dominion doing the same. Air Force in the Mountain West meanwhile is set to play at least 2 games (Army and Navy) despite the conference not playing. Notre Dame meanwhile will be playing in the ACC this year. If I've missed anything else (very possible), let me know.

I've debated what to do with this list with all the uncertainty. I've decided to leave off all the teams/conferences out of things for now. When they restart, I'll probably add them back in (depends on timing though; this will probably be a traditional college football season list). So that starts us this year with 77 teams. Now, on to week 1.

Teams with 1st Loss Week 1:
Southern Mississippi
Middle Tennessee
Texas State
Arkansas State
Navy

Week 1 Thoughts:
Not going to comment a lot with the limited football this week, but it was nice to see UAB get a win this week. Their program was abandoned, left for dead and now they are back and have a win while many bigger program fans are jealous they got to play.

Week 2 Thoughts:
ACC and Big 12 get started next week. There isn't a single line of a game showing up for me with a favorite less than 7 points. That said, one thing to note will be Notre Dame (while only temporarily a member) will be playing its first conference game ever at home hosting Duke. Will be interesting this week to see if the weird and varying schedules leading up to the season contribute to any big upsets or if we go closer to chalk (although early season always gives a few we look back at with surprise).

Maximum number of Undefeated Teams at the End of the Regular Season:
9: The 6 conference champs, plus Liberty and maximum of 2 between Army//BYU/Air Force

Notes: 1. I am counting Air Force as an independent this year. 2. This obviously changes if another conference gets started sooner than later (cough Big Ten).

Percent of Undefeateds with 1st Loss:
Week 1: 6.49% (5 of 77)

Remaining Undefeated Teams: ACC: 15, American Athletic: 10, Big 12: 10, Conference USA: 11, SEC: 14, Sun Belt: 8, independents: 4, total: 72

Thanks CW.

One other thing I should have noted was one big win was BYU stopping over Navy.  They looked very good.  With all of these teams out, they might actually be a CFP playoff bubble team, but their issue (and it is one I don't think they can get over), is that their schedule is wrecked.  Their best games are now probably @Navy, @ Army, and @Houston.  They need to hope all three of them are fantastic and win them convincingly and hope to pick up another game somewhere along the way.  Their best bet is for the American to look very good, with Houston or Navy winning it all with only one blemish.
