This is the thread for people who love listsm

For anyone new, basically what I’ll do is each week post the teams with their 1^st loss and the remaining undefeated teams. As the season progresses, I’ll add a 1-loss team list and a winless team list and note potential bigger games for the various teams. We can see how this lists change through the year.

Conference changes this year: We have a few changes this year, most involving the Sun Belt in one way or another. Coastal Carolina, which started its transition last year to FBS (I-A) has now completed it, is a full member of the Sun Belt, and will be eligible for both the inaugural Sun Belt Championship Game and for a bowl. The Sun Belt did not renew their football only membership for New Mexico State or Idaho however (the 2 orphans from the end of the WAC). New Mexico State starts playing this year as an independent. Idaho has dropped down to FCS and joined the Big Sky and thus will not be on the lists this year. It should also be noted, with the addition of the Sun Belt Championship game, this will be the first year without any conference using the traditional scheduling model.
-Our other change comes with Liberty starting the transition to FBS status, coming in as an independent.
Maximum number of Undefeated Teams at the End of the Regular Season:
14: The 10 conference champs, plus Notre Dame, Army, and a maximum of 2 of BYU/UMass/New Mexico State

Week 0 Games: This Saturday, teams who play at Hawaii are allowed to host games, so we have 4 teams potentially being removed from this list even before week 1. Two of the games involve FCS (I-AA) teams so we might only lose 2 teams. The games this week are: Duquesne @ UMass, Parire View @ Rice, Hawaii @ Colorado State, and Wyoming @ New Mexico State.
-Most interesting game to me there is probably Hawaii and Colorado State simply because it is a conference game. Wyoming and New Mexico State have a lot closer line though.

This is always fun to watch and a good way to keep track of undefeated teams but, as I've said before, it was a LOT more interesting/important when there were only two playoff spots. Now that there are four the 1-loss list is probably the more relevant CFP question (at least for P5 teams).

As I said in another thread, it appears that the CFP's criteria will be:
1) All undefeated P5 Champs (maximum of five)
2) All 1-loss P5 Champs (cumulative maximum of five)
3) All 1-loss P5 non-Champs (in theory this could be as many as a cumulative total of 22* teams.

* My theory on the maximum cumulative total of 1-loss or better P5 teams:
- In each of the eight divisions in the ACC, SEC, B1G, and PAC there could theoretically be three 1-loss teams (each going 1-1 against the other two and beating every other opponent). That would be 24 teams but then four of them would necessarily lose their CG's to become 2-loss teams bringing us to a maximum potential total of 20 from the ACC, SEC, B1G, and PAC.
- In the B12 where all 10 teams play each other the maximum number of 1-loss teams is three (each going 1-1 against the other two and beating every other opponent) less the one that went on to lose the CG thus bringing us to a total of two from the B12 for a grand total of 22.

Obviously this is all theoretical and would never actually happen for two reasons:
1) In order for it to even be theoretically possible none of the top teams could play each other in an OOC or non-divisional game.
2) If 22 teams hogged that many wins almost the entire rest of CFB would finish below .500. There is too much parity today for that to be a practical possibility.

The exact opposite possibility (that there are less than four total teams from groups 1-3 is much more likely. We have already been close several times.

My assumption is that if there are less than four teams in groups 1-3 the pattern will repeat and groups 4-5 will be:
Group 4: All 2-loss P5 Champs
Group 5: All 2-loss P5 non-Champs

The plausible exception is that a non-P5 team with a REALLY good SoS might get in ahead of group-4 or between groups 4 and 5. Additionally, a P5 team with an extraordinarily good or bad SoS might get moved up or down a level.
