I ordered the Pixel. Figured if this phone dies, I'm up Schitt's Creek without a paddle.

So the new one will be at my door Monday.

I've got the 7a Pro, it's coming up on 3 years old.  Battery life isn't quite what it was new, but it's hardly bad yet.  Capability and performance-wise, I'm happy with it.  I just really dislike the UI compared to my previous phones.

My 10+ year old battery lasts about 40 hours at last check.

Buy a Samsung, buy the best.

So, my Macbook Neo was returned, as noted elsewhere.  I'm rethinking my "need" for a laptop entirely.  My Dell desktop works fine.  And the keyboard is how I like it.  I use an iPad pretty often when not in my office.

I haven't been writing for months now.

Florida is in a back-to-school sales tax holiday until August 15.

The holiday includes computers @utee94 , up to $1,500.00.

I think you mentioned that it's a good time to buy a Dell.

Basic needs only. No gaming, etc.

Should I buy two, even though we don't need them?

Yeah buying before the end of the month would be good timing.  And I'd look for something on "clearance" which means we're discounting the previous generation model while making room for the new generation.  In general the performance should be about the same from one generation to the next, given equally spec'd systems, and the discounts are usually very good.

As for buying two, well, if you really don't need the second one and you can afford to hold off another year, then I'd probably do that.  I think prices will eventually come down but it could be 12-18 months out.

That said, I'm super-tempted to buy an XPS system that I like the looks of but really don't need, because I could get my kids' student discount on it and it would be a great deal.  But that's just the tech geek in me overreacting.
I'd probably do better to save that money for a vintage amp I've been craving, for my Vinyl Parlor. :)

I believe it was Smashung Sooner. HH intentionally messed up the name as I recall. I think @DevilFroggy has the entire original CFN board stored on his computer, so he could probably check.

As for the computer, one would be for me and one for my wife. Hers is from 2020 and mine is a 2024 (work).

The "t" at the end was how Slick messed it up.  It was typical Hooky clowning.

And I mean, if you really want two, then get two.  You're a wealthy Florida retired man.  Splurge! :)

(I'd definitely go ahead and upgrade from the 2020 one, 6 years is a long time before a laptop refresh)

I stretch my laptops like I stretch my vehicles.  Take care of both, both last me a good long time.

To date, I've not had any problems with performance on a laptop, if the specs were pretty good at the time I bought it.  Eventually the backlighting goes out, or something like that.  Sometimes it's a cheap fix, sometimes I just buy a new one.  But it's always been years and years.  I've had great success with Dells.  Over a period of 21 years, I had only three, as a matter off fact, which I think is pretty good.  I bought a new one last year, so now it's 4 in 22 years.  But really, I only upgraded this time because Microsoft quit supporting Windows 10, and rather than upgrade the OS, I just decided to "splurge" and get a new one.  But the old one was working fine, other than faltering OS performance.  In fact, my common mode of operation is to take my old laptops and convert them into my Linux machine.  The Dells, from a hardware standpoint, usually keep right on trucking, even past the 7ish year average they give me as Windows machines.

Now, if somebody just wants to stay in new digs, I don't begrudge that at all.

Just depends on what you're using it for.  Web browsing and email, you can go on for decades, or at least until the OS goes unsupported.

Coding or analytics, and the updates to the software will render an older system nearly inoperable after a few years.  This isn't the fault of the hardware, it's generally just software bloat, but it's a problem anyway.

(The above is true for MS-based systems, UNIX based systems are far more efficient and can roll on indefinitely, as you've noted with your Linux conversions)

In general I agree, though I'll note I did make it through to graduation and beyond when I went back to school and used my pretty old laptop to learn coding and analytics.

Granted, there would be a meaningful difference in if I did that for a living with real-world systems vs. what we did for class assignments.  iirc, the largest dataset we used in class was only 4 million rows and maybe 100 columns.  And the most taxing ML stuff I ran only took about 15 minutes to perform, whereas if I were doing that "for real," a machine like mine would take exponentially longer to perform an ML task, and of course I'd be doing it a lot more, so that probably would reduce a lot of life.  OTOH, generally I'd expect to have a work-issued laptop if I did that stuff for a living.

So as a true Personal Computer, I seem unlikely to do a lot of heavy lifting with my own machine.

That said, I'm still highly averse to something like a Chromebook.  My PC may largely function like an internet portal, but I just can't exist in that environment.  I do some stuff that needs a legit machine.

Intel vs. AMD? Intell is $679 with half of the storage than the AMD has. AMD is $599.
