I have always had a full streaming service after football season because of Formula 1.  But now F1 has moved to Apple so I have no need to keep it anymore.  I'll now happily kill YTTV after football season.

So I assume you have something in addition to YTTV right now to watch the Texas/Aggie games on ESPN channels?

So far the only UT or A&M game played since the great blackout, was UT-Vandy which was on ABC over the air.  A&M was on a bye week.

This coming weekend UT is on a bye week.  Not sure what the Ags are doing but I'll be volunteering all day for a marching band competition anyway.

Hopefully by the following weekend, it'll be resolved.

A&M/Mizzou, ABC.  I can hook up my antenna I guess.  I need to get some longer wire and connectors but I have the antenna, I'm just not close to Houston (50 miles) so the reception can be iffy.  Digital is weird, it's either crystal clear or almost nothing but blocky Atari looking shit.

Yeah, digital is like that. It has error correction built into the protocol so that if the signal isn't perfect, the picture is still perfect. But the instant you get too many errors to correct, it goes from perfect to shitty real quick.

I'm about 60 miles from the towers in LA, so I simply had to buy a higher quality antenna. Can't use any of the inexpensive indoor antennas where I live.

I used the antenna when I had Sling as it didn't do local channels. But once I mounted the TV above the mantle, and switched to Hulu Live TV (which includes locals)--and the neighbor's tree fell on our house damaging the antenna--I stopped using it.

But your post made me think... I wonder if it would be worthwhile to get Sling again and just get a new antenna for locals. I can buy a USB TV tuner that will go to where my little Linux box is--which is already wired via HDMI to the TV, and which is right next to where the cable can be routed from outdoors. So I don't have to route the cable from the antenna all the way to the TV.

Ever since the first YTTV/Disney scare before the first game of the season, which forced me to drag out my old OTA antenna, I've been using it to watch a lot of OTA sports.  The picture is so much better.

It's old but it's a powered antenna so it works pretty well even in the sticks.

My rabbit ears work pretty well, 15 miles away from the source. Haven't needed them this year.

We're not even that far from the local stations, but the indoor digital antennas are hit-or-miss on the 1 or 2 channels they actually can receive.  Most of the local stations aren't even trying to come through.  But I suspect we're plenty close enough for a good outdoor one.

I can envision me buying and setting up an outdoor antenna, although I know nothing about them or how much labor and DIY-savvy is necessary.

What I can't envision is running cable from an outdoor antenna into the TV.  I pretty well know what that would entail, and it's more than I can/want to do.

I suspicious of the indoor digital antennas.  I bought what was purported to be a nice one back in San Marcos when OTA switched to digital signal.  There were 6 English channels in Austin that I think of as "standard"--ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, CW--and then there were at least a couple Spanish local stations which I didn't pay attention to.

I don't remember which ones didn't work at all, but about half of those came in down in San Marcos somewhat reliably, although any slight movement to the antenna was likely to drop the signal.  The others I never could pick up.  I think I was able to get 1 or 2 from San Antonio as well, but iirc, it was two of the same stations as I got from Austin, so it was kinda annoying that they weren't different ones.

Thing is, back in 2014 I was visiting a buddy in Austin and we went to Best Buy to pick up another nice digital antenna so we could watch the NFC and AFC championships that day.  He lived well within Austin city limits where all the channels should've been easy to catch if that technology were worth a damn.  It was still tough going, even at his apartment.  We wondered if living in an apartment building on the first floor was a problem, and also the whole complex was kind of in a minor valley area due to the hilly nature of that part of Austin, so that there was plenty of trees and structures blocking a clear airway, so to speak, from signal source to antenna.  But it sure seems like you should be able to get all Austin's OTA channels easy-peasy if you're in Austin.  The fact that we couldn't just furthered my impression that those digital antennas are crap, or the strength of digital OTA signals are crap, or both.  My old school rabbit-ears picked up stations for miles and miles.  Maybe not as clear as digital, but far more usable and I didn't have to worry about a speck of dust falling on the antenna or breathing the wrong way and the signal goes out.

We live 25 air miles from the where all our local stations broadcast, and those goofy indoor digital antennas can't pick up shit.  It got CBS in a very tough-and-go manner for a bit, but then that stopped.  It never did get any of the others.

I think those things are basically a scam.

Man I don't have any problem with my antenna. We live 17 miles from the broadcast towers and zero issues.  It's not an expensive one but it is powered, which helps a bit.

Also a quick note-- there's no difference between an analog and a digital TV antenna.  The carrier signal is always analog.  The only thing that's necessary is that your antenna is designed to pick up signals in the VHF, UHF, or both, frequency ranges.  And pretty much all TV antennas manufactured in our lifetime have been designed to do that.

The receiver/tuner is what can tell the difference between an analog modulated signal, and a digitally modulated signal.

Here in the USA, back around 2009, all TV broadcasters were required to switch the modulated content of their signal from analog to digital.  But the carrier signal is the same, it's still analog, and any antenna will work with either as long as it is designed and tuned to receive carrier signals in the VHF and UHF bands.

Now, if you're finding that old antennas work better than new ones, what might be true, is that the newer ones are made cheaper and are of generally lower quality.  I don't really follow the TV antenna market so I can't comment on that.

The one I have from probably about 2005, has always worked well at tailgate parties, and here at my house.

HA! That's exaclty what I did,got tired of the Cable/Streaming services rampant over charging like it was the air we breathe. My house faces North, the TV station towers are south and east I have to pull in the TV antenna into the dinnette/back bedroom for reception from local television stations(sometimes). Really only do this on CFB Saturdays with bad weather. As NBC likes a different location placement than NBC and so forth. Surprisingly I get aound 50 channels sometimes it's problematic finding reception spots but once I do receptions good until I want to switch
