It was a real thing, but it also became the Gen-X version of "The dog ate my homework."

Got an external Logitech camera that we use for work.  I tend to keep mine disconnected and just do any Teams/Zoom meetings with no video unless I'm presenting, and that's because the mouse tracking is severely delayed and impaired when the camera is connected via USB.

I have no idea why that is, but it's annoying as hell.

This could also go in the grumpy old man thread.  I would like to know what's causing that and if there's a fix for it.  I'm not the only one with that issue.  Several of my coworkers tell me they have the same problem.

I've pretty much stopped using any wireless devices.  I have a hardwired camera, hardwired headset, and hardwired mouse. At work I also have a hardwired keyboard.  Just too many issues with bluetooth connectivity and latency.

Weird.  The solution doesn't help my work laptop when I'm using it at home, because all of the external hardware is USB-A and the Latitude only has USC-C ports, so we're given USB-C hubs like this:

I have this one

Thing is, at work our laptops are connected to a monitor workstation which directly takes all the hardware connections, including a wired mouse (I have wireless at home).  But even the wired mouse has the same latency problems when the camera is on.  The difference is, at work with the wired mouse, the camera has to be on for the issue to arise, whereas at home the camera only has to be connected--but not even on--for the problem to occur.

That reminds me of a YouTube video I recently saw where a guy was complaining about that kind of stuff a little bit, using a dishwasher as an example.  There's some brand that apparently doesn't work if you connect it to wifi, and he did some digging and found out it's capable of collecting more data about you than you'd think possible for a dishwasher.  The point of his video was basically "Y'all.....what are we doing?"

EDIT:  That should've read "....doesn't work if you don't connect it to wifi."

So on that laptop I recently bought....

It still carries the name "Inspiron" and my work laptop is labeled "Latitude," so that's how I'll refer to them even if the names are about to be defunct (Dell and Dell Pro, according to utee).

It's a Inspiron 5000 series (don't remember the exact number), so that'd currently be a "Dell Plus."  The work machine is a Latitude 9000 series so that'd be a Dell Pro Premium.  I didn't purchase the work laptop of course, so I'm not sure how much it cost, but the new personal one was on sale for $600.  I think it was $150 or $200 off, so hypothetically let's call it a $750 machine.

Won't know about longevity for a while, but as for performance, I have to say I'm very happy with it.  I can't really discern a difference between it and the work laptop (no idea if the i7 processor in the personal vs. i5 in the work one mitigates any other specs).  There are a couple of cosmetic differences in which the Inspiron is inferior, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay significantly more to upgrade them.  i.e., the work laptop's screen has richer, more saturated colors when I compare the same pictures, and it's most noticeable with black, where the work laptop looks like a very deep, dark black (I like that) vs. the Inspiron which has a lighter, bit more washed out black.  And at least some purples....I pulled up photos of LSU players and the Latitude shows the purple jerseys true to life, whereas the Inspiron pictures turns them basically to blue....not true to life at all.  And the Inspiron's touchpad feels really nice, but when you press it to click (as opposed to lightly tapping to click), it feels a bit cheaper somehow than the sleek feel of the Latitude's touchpad when depressed.  And I prefer the hinge design of the Latitude to the Inspiron.  But that's about it, and honestly the screen looks really good on mine.....I only notice its inferiority when I directly compare it side by side to the nicer work machine, or the wife's Macbook.

I was never really sure exactly what the difference between Latitudes and Inspirons were supposed to be.  I know Latitudes were considered "work" machines, thus the new label "Dell Pro" I suppose.  But I'm not sure what tangibly separates them.  Maybe it's just the cosmetic things.  Or maybe these cosmetic things I mentioned are incidental to the two machines I happen to be on frequently.  It does seem that Inspirons and Latitudes in the same spec ranges have comparable prices, so again I don't know what's the difference, other than maybe in the future I'll be inclined to go with Latitudes, or Dell Pros or whatever.  But assuming I get several years out of this Inspiron, I'm happy with it.  I've loaded it up with all my data analytics software and it runs my ML notebooks fine.  And the main thing of course, which is the browser goes to cfb51.com and YouTube just fine.

Now I just gotta figure out how to get Microsoft/Windows to quit bugging me about the cloud.  Once the old laptop (a Latitude) is ready for full decommission, it will become my latest Linux machine.

Fit and finish are a little better on the Lati compared to the Inspiron, but really it's more about the software image.  Inspiron will be more consumer-focused so it tends to come with more bells and whistles, which also makes it more volatile from an enterprise-wide IT support standpoint.  Lati comes with a more stable image, fewer consumer-specific bells and whistles, but easier from an enterprise-wide IT support standpoint.  Similarly, Lati should come with more and better security tools, designed to be managed by centralized IT support.

But really, unless you're doing some very specific whizz-bang consumer stuff, either one should be fine.  I think you have the option of Windows Home or Windows Pro on either one, typically.
