My suggestion is to travel to places you might retire and spend some time there first.  Fast growing states might NOT be good choices, depending.
My oarents did this, greatly helped them decide where to retire.    They visited the finalists during various seasons and we even had local newspaper sent to us for a wee bit.     It really opened their eyes.

At one point, we both go pretty excited about a high rise condo in Jacksonville, right on the river, incredible views, elevator stopped only at that unit, 24th floor or so, originally like $800 K now half price, about.  Upon further reflection it ended up obviously as a no.
