Yeah, the show I saw had us under a foot of volcanic ash.  I think it would actually be better on the west coast, the prevailing winds would carry most of it east.

I also saw as a kid that even though I grew up in the middle of nowhere, we are smack between 2 of the top nuke targets--Omaha for the communication grid, and Colorado Springs for Cheyenne Mt.  I'm not old enough for the duck and cover drills, they figured that was a futile exercise.

No wonder I was all verklempt about looming disaster as a 4th grader.

yup, Offutt AFB is right at 100 miles south of me

Always figured if I had a few minutes warning, I'd go north on I-29 towards Canada as fast as possible if the Russkis launched the big missiles

I'm between Warner Robins AFB and Dobbins AFB, maybe 90 miles and 15 miles.  I think the former was a SAC base.

I vauely recall school drills in 1962, it makes an impression on the kids while being mostly useless.

The failed Bay of Pigs Invasion in April 1961 directly set the stage for the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962

my father was worried about having a son born in July of 1962 and what might become of the world

he was a worrier - perhaps for good reason

I think there's a good chance the Bay of Pigs and how that was allowed to fail set the stage for another nation-changing incident in Dallas the year after that, too.

But we're way off topic now.

Far enough from Minot to avoid the calamity? Maybe not. I think you want to direct yourself a bit more towards Ontario to avoid that fallout.

I worry more about the zombie apocalypse. Living where I do, I'm pretty sure I'm cooked in the nuclear one. But with the zombies I might have a chance. So even though that is far less likely to occur, I'll have more to worry about should it come to pass. Gotta have a plan. Nukes? I've had a good run.

My suggestion is to travel to places you might retire and spend some time there first.  Fast growing states might NOT be good choices, depending.

North Carolina is going to pass Georgia in population in a few years.
