I've never sat in a Mustang E thing, I've walked around one outside, it looks to me like a smallish crossover.  It's not quite what I call a CUV (RAV4 like).  It's lower, kind of sportyish looking, but with a back hatch and four doors, call it a crossover.

I think in Cali it could make some sense if you own your own home.

It doesn't really make a distinction.  I term our car a "CUV", or small SUV.  
I think a crossover is more "carlike".

They are astoundingly popular on the road.

A crossover, to me, is a blend between a small sedan or hatchback and a CUV.  Toyota even calls it a "Cross" as the name of it.
