The Kirkland Prosecco is the one my wife adores, $7.99.  I can drink a glass of it, it's on the sweet side, which is why she likes it.  Only at Costco though.

Kirkland wines generally are da bomb.

I agree, but they were asked solely about wine types.  Their response makes sense to me.  I've never had Champagne with pizza though, or any sparkler other than beer.

For still wines?  Nothing really comes to mind, maybe a mundane house red of no consequence, or Chianti.

The years seem to skip around a lot, some odd numbered years omitted.  I dunno why.

Chianti works well. So does Barbera (some).

I remember when chianti came in those straw covered weird wine bottles, haven't seen anything of that ilk in decades.  Chianti can be very good wine of course, the top being Brunello, which gets pricey, though Costco will have Kirkland Brunello at times for around $20.

The actual varietal used is sangiovese, which is nice to know because you'll find some made in CA which can be quite good.

I can still find the wicker-bottle Chiantis at my local grocery store, usually around $11 or $12.  It's not great wine but it's drinkable IMO.

But there are plenty of sangiovese varietals that are NOT specifically from the Chianti region, both of Italian origin and American.  You can find some tasty ones around that same general price range of $10-$15 which begs the question-- why bother with the cheapo wicker wine bottle Chiantis at all?  I guess the answer is, presentation?  Or maybe tradition?

I think tradition, and American expectations.  I usually shop at Tower, a liquor wine store that is pretty large, and I'm pretty sure they don't have the wicker stuff, but I don't look for it.  They have some nice Brunellos out of my general price range.

I've never had a sparkling wine with pizza but I guess it could be okay?  Beer works well, obviously.

For still wines, super simple reds like the aforementioned Chianti or sangiovese in general work well.  Complex wines like Bordeaux definitely don't work well IMO.

In Sicily they had a local dry white from the grillo grape, that I drank with pretty much everything, including pizza.  And I've enjoyed pinot grigio with pizza in other parts of Italy.
