PSU has played THEE weakest schedule of any B1G team, and their previous 2 victories, Akron and Pitt, lost their games this weekend by a combined 100-35.

PSU, UW and UM have all played nobody, and most of the conference would be undefeated against any of their schedules.
But we viewed them as 3 of the clear top 4 preseason, and they haven't lost so it is what it is.
OSU lost a game against a team FAR better than anyone any of those teams have played, and one I would pick to beat any of them, but it's college football and a loss is a loss so they are behind them.

I had PSU at #2 to start the season and when OSU lost I moved PSU up to #1. they haven't done anything other than what they are supposed to do, which is dominate on both sides of the ball.

You can make pretty good arguments for any team in the top 4.  PSU won the conference last year and has yet to be challenged this year.  Michigan has the best defense.  Wiscy appears to be a more dangerous team on offense yet still plays strong defense.  And who bets against Urban Meyer?

I was big on PSU coming into the season, and OSU looking deficient on offense and defense against Oklahoma made me drop them.  If they had been competitive and lost a great game I wouldn't have been as dour on them.  Michigan plays great defense, but their offense just isn't very good.  Last year, they mashed a bunch of teams, but they don't appear nearly as dominant (and they lost three games last year).  Wisconsin and PSU haven't really played anybody, so who knows?

1.  Wisconsin (3)- Looked absolutely incredible last week on all sides of the ball.  18 for 19 on pass attempts, which blows my mind.
2.  Penn State (1)- Win against Pitt doesn't look as good as it once did.  Still haven't played anyone of note.  Although they are blowing out teams, the O-Line, D-Line, and linebackers have looked average.  However, outside of those positions they may be the best in the B1G in every other area on the field.
3.  Ohio State (4)- JT Barrett and the Offense are still playing well, hard to know if they solved their pass D problems when they faced Army this week...
4.  Michigan (2) - 1 touchdown in 20 trips to the red zone?  Did I hear that right?  Yikes.  We knew the passing game was really weak, but the entire offense may be worse than I thought.   One or two plays swing Air Force's way, and they very well could have lost last week.  Weird to say this, but I'll move them back up if they can beat Purdue next week...
5.  Maryland (5) (Numbers 5-8 are so close, it's hard to pick...)
6.  Michigan State (6)
7.  Minnesota (7)
8.  Iowa (8)
9.  Purdue (10)
10.  Northwestern (12) - I'll hold out hope that Duke is actually really good, and move NW up a bit
11.  Nebraska (9)
12.  Indiana (11) - I get the feeling I've got these guys super underrated...
13.  Illinois (13)
14.  Rutgers (14) - A MEAC school?  was this a make up game or something?

I agree with you, and moved PSU down as a result.

It's semantics at this juncture in the season but I think Florida is being a little under-weighted in their strength. Massey is as good of a computer poll as you get. Granted, we have 3 games under our belts, but it has Florida #14.

Massey also really likes the B1G right now, with 4 in the Top 10, and Iowa and MN hovering in the 20's. For some reason Purdue is way down the list. I would guess that is largely due to just how terrible Mizzou is this year. Mizzou is ranked almost universally lower than Rutgers right now.

Michigan seems to have a more than competent running game. Its the passing game that's the obvious mess. You know what you got with O'Korn (which isnt much). I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a series or two of Peters to test the waters.

I think this is a crapshoot right now:
  • Penn State - They have looked the best, but I'm not sure that is saying much given their opposition.
  • Wisconsin - Much like PSU they have looked good but I don't know how much should be read into that.
  • Ohio State - Obviously have not looked as good as PSU/UW but I'm not completely convinced that it isn't because OU and Indiana are better than everyone on PSU and UW's schedule so far by a mile.
  • Michigan - Great D, downright awful passing game (possibly worse than Ohio State's) and mediocre running game.
  • Maryland?
  • Iowa
  • Minnesota
  • Purdue?
  • Michigan State
  • Indiana
  • Nebraska
  • Northwestern
  • Illinois
  • Rutgers

I'm not sure how much "more than competent" Michigan's running game is right now.  Both the Wolverines and Buckeyes have MAJOR issues in the passing game but as of right now I'm a lot more confident in Ohio State's running game.  (FWIW: I think Michigan's D looks better so that doesn't necessarily mean that I think Ohio State is better right now).
Michigan Running:
  • 49 for 215, 4.4 avg and a TD against Florida
  • 37 for 193, 5.2 avg and 0 TD's against Cincy
  • 42 for 190, 4.5 avg and a TD against Air Force
Ohio State's Running:
  • 51 for 292, 5.7 avg and 3 TD's against Indiana
  • 34 for 167, 4.9 avg and a TD against Oklahoma
  • 32 for 270, 8.4 avg and 3 TD's against Army

The 4.4 avg against Florida might be ok except that Tennessee managed to average 5.5 against the Gators.

The 5.2 against Cincinnati is somewhat alarming though it is better than Cincy's other two opponents (Miami, 2.2 and Austin Peay, 3.7).

There is a lot of football to be played and Michigan is still undefeated so they have time to figure it out but as I see it right now they have a really good defense and an offense that is barely competent at anything.  Their rushing is mediocre and their passing is abysmal.  That makes their offense, in my view, worse than Ohio State's because at least Ohio State is good at something (rushing).  To be fair, Ohio State is possibly worse at passing and probably worse at defense.  If they played tomorrow I think the first one to 10 points wins.

You could easily interchange PSU, Wisconsin and Michigan, in my opinion, at the top spot and I'd have no issues.  And let's be honest, Ohio State's certainly still not that far behind if at all.

Michigan's win against Florida is on par with Penn State's with Pitt.  I know I'll get crucified for saying that, but Florida's simply not that good and would get smoked as well by Okie St.  I'll agree that Michigan's best win right now is Air Force.

Wisconsin and PSU have done what they needed to do, beat bad opponents.  PSU looks the most complete, but if you dig a bit you'll find some real flaws right now.  The OL is not playing well, the DL is getting pushed around at times and hasn't looked good against the run (hint-hint, Iowa and Michigan fans).  Penn State on Sept 18th is not the same Penn State as January 2 last year, yet.

Man it's just so head scratching to see the conference falling flat on its face at this point (damn near EVERY team has to some extent including the 'top three') in the non-con.

Last week in parenthesis

1. PENN STATE (1) - Pitt win doesn't look so good anymore, close to dropping them to #2
2. WISCONSIN (2) - not their fault it isn't vintage BYU
3. MICHIGAN (3) - not their fault it isn't vintage Florida
4. OHIO STATE (4) - pretty sure they'd be every bit as 3-0 as the top 3 if they had played any of their schedules
5. MARYLAND (6) - Texas may be alright
6. MINNESOTA (8) - Buffalo blip aside, Fleck has his team manhandling the teams they should
7. INDIANA (7) - glad they got a should win to replace the cancelled should win
8. IOWA (5) - couple of nailbiters again bottom feeders, and I think we all overrated Wyoming
9. MICHIGAN STATE (9) - we'll see on Saturday how ill timed that bye week was
10. PURDUE (11) - Missouri is a mess, but that's what solid teams do against messes
11. NORTHWESTERN (12) - nice bounceback week
12. NEBRASKA (10) - was nice knowin' ya Mike
13. ILLINOIS (13) - they were who we thought they were
14. RUTGERS (14) - I should drop Rutgers farther for even scheduling a MEAC team
