If one goes back in history preBCS, how often would this have caused issues?

The BYU year perhaps?

Best compromise is 10 teams.  Top 6 conference champs + 4 at-large teams.

That isn't fair to Team 11 (or 5).

If the Old Bowl system were revived and we retained the Rose Bowl alignment, we might often have mismatches (apparent) in it, meaning a top level team would play a mediocre team.  This could cause issues of course.  The other major bowls would be more likely to pair one loss teams and undefeateds, and you could end up with a plethora of pinatas, one loss teams.

I quess it all depends upon what people are expecting from the playoff. If we are looking for the best team in the country, you may get it or you may not. Even the best teams have an off day.

However, I few the CFP as more of a very small, postseason tournament with only 4 teams invited. The winner is simply the winner of the tournament. That does not confer best team in the country necessarily. Sometimes it is and sometimes its not.

But if we are going to have a postseason tournament, I would like to expand it one more layer to 8 teams and give bids to the 5 P5 conf champs, the best G5 and 2 at large teams. Just my opinion of course.

The regular bowls +1 as necessary is the least amount of change.  It's the minimal amount of tomfoolery.  Have your Rose Bowl how you prefer it, SEC champ to the Sugar, etc.
.
On G5 inclusion:
I don't feel like including the tallest midget does anything.  They're still a midget.  It still, EVEN WITH A SEAT AT THE TABLE, perpetuates the lie that they're on equal footing as the P5 programs.  They get a seat at the playoff table, but they can't reach the silverware and forget about their fancy wine glass.  They become cannon fodder.  Cannon fodder with a giant spotlight shone on them every year.  They can all - App St, Boise, Fresno - change their mascots to the Sacrificial Lambs.
It won't be some 2nd-prize bowl game they'll be playing in.  They'll be matched up with a 0 or 1-loss big-boy team with all of its ultimate goals still in front of it.
They'd be a 16 seed in an 8-team tournament.

Right, entertainment.  Not really interested in revealing the best team season.
