One MAJOR issue with a revised playoff is that no two people seem able to agree on the format.

I want to find out though so I want those three SEC teams to play non-SEC teams in the first round.
Be careful what you wish for....

0+1. This is essentially what we have now except they are selecting what they think are the Top 4 and placing them in selected Bowls. Let the Bowls play out and then select the Top 2. We would again have tremendous interest in ALL of the major Bowls.

I get it, they might all win. I even said that if they do, great, they get three in the semi-final!

I know I've told you this before but:
I generally agree with your contention that the playoff should be the best teams. My issue is that we don't actually KNOW which teams are the best. There isn't much interleague play and even when there is a high-end game it is usually just one so I don't feel that the result is conclusive. Ie, maybe the winner just had a particularly great day or the loser a particularly bad day.

With such little interleague play I feel that our assessment of the leagues necessarily incorporates a lot of guesswork. That is why I can't support letting in a 4th team from the SEC (or the B1G for that matter) in lieu of the best team from another league.

Two at-large spots still leaves the SEC the possibility of getting three teams in and if yours ends up as the SEC's fourth highest ranked team and not the Champions I'd say too bad.

You've latched on to the 4th-best SEC team when the 4th-best SEC team has never been in play or advocated for.

My very favorite idea is the old-school bowls +1 game if there remain 2 undefeated teams.  Even if that means there are 3 undefeateds after the bowls and it becomes a beauty contest.

If no undefeated teams remain, it's a beauty contest anyway.  Don't like it?  Don't lose.
In such a system, Miami and Washington would have played in '91.  Michigan and Nebraska in '97.  Auburn vs USC in '04.

I'm just looking forward to when Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC.  I think I'd be ok w/ 3 SEC teams out of 8 total spots in the playoffs, but 4 is where I'm drawing the line.

The point, at least from my perspective is that I prefer a hybrid between the "best teams" extreme that you advocate and the "champions only" extreme that others on here advocate.  I've latched onto the 4th best because my model with two at-large teams would permit three but NOT four teams from any one conference.

FWIW:
I advocate for a spot for the highest ranked G5 Champion not because I actually like the idea but because I think that it would be necessary from a legal/political perspective to give some path to the non-P5 teams.  I frankly think that most years the highest ranked G5 Champion would just end up as a near-bye for the highest ranked Champion and I'm ok with that.  They earned that break by being #1.

In theory I like this idea.  I've seen similar proposals before with a flexible playoff or flexible post-bowl playoff.  I think it is great in theory but that is as far as it goes there is no way that a possible, if needed game would get into the mix.

Hey, what we decide here is what will happen in reality.  Somewhere.

And I bet we can decide anything because no two posters will agree.  OK, maybe two do.
