Beyond providing some insight as to what the PC weighs in ranking order, does any of this matter in the real world?

I think any team in the top ten has a shot at the CFP, some of them "control their own destiny".  If Oregon goes 12-1, they likely are going to make it unless Clemson is 13-0, for example.  One key is the lower ranked teams and whether they were defeated by those upper level teams.  If say Wake Forest loses again and drops out, it damages Clemson.

Anyway, it's something to talk about, which is fine.  That Bama-LSU game is looking important.

I guess I'm surprised Alabama didn't make the top 4.
A decade of Victory over Penn State.

All in since 1969

They could well make it of course down the road, but there are too many unbeatens at the moment.

I don't think the committee has any bias for Bama beyond the obvious recent history (which probably is an influence).

Listen sir! They put numbers next to teams and it’s supposed to make you cranky.

Tennessee has the record right now.  ....and this is just the first week for crying out loud.

South Carolina will beat clemson and take them down to 7 or beyond before it shakes out.

The strength of schedule is what locks B1G up every year, but instead of fixing that yall want to fix the system? That's pretty entitled of yall.

TCU under bama is where I lose traction.  Yeah, they have some opponents I've never even heard of before- but they're still undefeated and after a four game run that would stress anyone.

The B1G should become, collectively, LSU fans this weekend.  Remove bama from the mix, hope USCe can scalp Clemson, and there is a good shot at two teams in the playoffs for yall.  Otherwise, it's the winner of the last game only, and who will have the weakest SoS and SoR of the bunch.

So we have to root for the Domers against Clemson?
We, especially tOSU fans like you and I do because it would REALLY help tOSU's SOS and eventual CFP admission/seeding arguments if Notre Dame was a quality win and Clemson was NOT undefeated.

unfortunately, yes. feels gross.
Sure does and I agree that you Michigan fans should be rooting for the Domers as well. If the tOSU/M winner is 13-0 and the tOSU/M loser is 11-1, I think said loser has a shot but it is a MUCH better shot if Clemson loses and specifically if they lose to a team that tOSU defeated.

And for all of the "if Michigan beats OSU it works itself out" people, yes.  But if they don't.  This ranking tells me that an 11-1 UM team with a loss to OSU is behind a 12-1 Clemson team with a loss in the ACC Championship.  Which is ridiculous
I hope you are wrong but fear that you are right.

That said, if Michigan ends up being left out in a close call they can blame whoever us responsible for their OOC schedule.

Trolling is one thing, but trying to set up an entire board for disappointment is just mean.

Huh?

SoS of contenders per Sagrin:
  • 16, Utah
  • 18, Bama
  • 24, LSU
  • 26, TCU
  • 27, Oregon
  • 29, tOSU
  • 32, USC
  • 47, TN
  • 50, UGA
  • 53, Illinois
  • 55, Ole Miss
  • 59, UNC
  • 60, UCLA
  • 65, Clemson
  • 69, M

Exactly. I also understand Tennessee because since they play Georgia this week, that will work itself out. I’d put the Buckeyes at 1, but I understand the Tennessee argument. Clemson at 4 makes no sense at all.
I really didn't and still don't care about the order of the top-3 because with UGA/TN playing the winner will go to #1 and the loser drops regardless of the order before that game.
