Nebraska (4-6, 2-5) @ Maryland (3-7, 1-6) Game Week

The Matchup
Nebraska completes its 2019 road schedule on Saturday afternoon, as the Huskers travel to College Park, Md., to take on the Maryland Terrapins. The game from Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium is set to kickoff off shortly after 2:30 p.m. CT (3:30 p.m. local) and will be televised by BTN. The game can be heard on the Husker Sports Network from Learfield-IMG.

Nebraska will enter the contest with a 4-6 record and a 2-5 mark in Big Ten Conference play.  The Huskers are coming off a 37-21 loss to No. 15 Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon in Lincoln. Nebraska's offense rolled up 493 yards against the Badgers' stingy defense, but was unable to finish drives in the loss. Nebraska enters the final two games of the regular season needing a pair of victories to extend its season and become bowl eligible.

Maryland was off last Saturday and enters the contest with a 3-7 record, including a 1-6 mark in Big Ten Conference play. The Terrapins' explosive offense has been at its best in home games in College Park, averging 35.4 points per game in five 2019 home games.  Maryland boasts one of the league's top rushing attacks, averaging better than 170 yards per game with 15 running plays of 40 yards or more this season.

Saturday's game will mark Nebraska's first-ever trip to Maryland, and just the second meeting between the two schools since becoming members of the Big Ten. Nebraska defeated Maryland, 28-7, in Lincoln in 2016 in the only previous matchup between the teams.

Series History
Saturday's game is only the second matchup between two of the newest members of the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska defeated Maryland, 28-7, in Lincoln late in the 2016 season.

•    Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011 as the 12th member of the conference, three seasons before Maryland and Rutgers joined as the 13th and 14th schools in the league.

•    Nebraska held Maryland scoreless for the first three quarters and held the Terrapins to 207 yards in the victory.

•    The game will be Nebraska's first at Maryland and first ever game in the state of Maryland.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-5, 4-6) at Maryland Terrapins (1-6, 3-7)
3:30 - College Park, MD - BTN
John Blake, Charlie Strong, Rich Rodriguez.  Since Bob Devaney arrived in Lincoln in 1962, and cemented Nebraska as an absolute helmet school, those are the only three coaches at any of the eight (Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, USC) probably sure fire helmets, to have losing records in each of their first two seasons.  Scott Frost seems destined to become the fourth.  People knew he inherited a mess, and was implementing a new system, and while 2018 was rough, the improvement from September to November was noticeable, and the locals were content.  People bought in, and Nebraska was ranked to start the season for the first time since 2014, and the Huskers were a trendy pick to win the West.  Now, they need to win a road game at Maryland just to keep bowl hopes alive going into the finale.  This marks Nebraska's first trip to Maryland in program history, the only previous meeting, in 2016, being in Lincoln, so even for this yawner, you know Big Red will travel strong for their program's first appearance in Byrd Stadium.  The struggles of Adrian Martinez has been the narrative for the season, so maybe the glimses he showed in the loss to Wisconsin last week are reasons for optimism.  He had his highest QBR, passer rating and total yardage since Week 4 against Illinois.  Now he gets to face a Maryland defense that isn't slowing anyone down.  Maryland is last in the Big Ten in scoring defense, total defense and passing defense.  And for all the lamenting Frost's program's lack of progress, the Nebraska offense is still #4 in the Big Ten both in ypp and total offense.  They've simply left too many points on the board, due to missed kicks, and failed 4th down conversions due to concerns in the kicking game.  Nebraska has attempted 16 4th downs, most in Big Ten play, despite having the second worst conversion percentage (25%) in the league.  Maryland's problems seem to be the type that need an offseason to correct, for Locksley to continue to mold the program he wants.  Since Week 3, the Terps have only been competitive in a game twice.  I think you can make that three, but Nebraska, and a 100% Adrian Martinez can overwhelm this Terp defense.
NEBRASKA 28, MARYLAND 27

only 28 points

probably leaving a handful of TDs off the board again

probably another 500 yard day for the offense

» Maryland is famous for ACC hoops, but it claimed two national football championships in 1951 and 1953.

That was a time when there were several national titles awarded by different groups.
Back then, the wire services — the Associated Press and United Press International — voted for the national championship before the bowl games.
But in 1951, Maryland beat “national champion” Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl and claimed a “mythical” national championship. In 1953, the reverse happened. Maryland won the AP and UPI national titles before its Orange Bowl game against Oklahoma, which the Terps lost. But they had already been named national champs.

You know what Scott Frost’s road record is? No, really, do you? Try and calculate it really quick. The answer: 1-8. The only win was a pretty incredible comeback at Illinois two months ago. So how bad does Nebraska want to win on the road on a bad weather day in front of very few people?

Maryland has returned two kickoffs and one punt for a touchdown. Nebraska should endeavor not to give up one of those. That’s it. Kickoffs returned for touchdowns = bad.

Not that four straight losses illuminate it well, but Nebraska’s offense has generally been pretty hot at the start of games. Good play-calling, good tempo. NU has averaged 127.3 yards per game in the first quarter.
Don’t be surprised if Nebraska posts those yards—and points — in every quarter as Frost and Walters rev up an offense finally finding its footing and stop worrying about protecting NU’s beaten-up and beaten-down defense.
Nebraska wants a track meet, Maryland plays that way, too, so look for points. NEBRASKA 42, MARYLAND 31

I hate Scott Frost.

As usual, he teaches his players to try and injure any player they can.

They pile on the RB's and QB's and twist and slide under them to get their ankles caught under them, as well as driving elbows into their legs.

They drive their facemasks into them as well, as witnessed on the sack of Jackson in the 1st quarter.

He knows depth is an issue on most teams, and there is no doubt this is a philosophy he employs.

He did it at UCF, and he's doing it at Nebraska.

Has to be the most dirty HC I've ever seen.
