Franklin's teams always play the Buckeyes tough, with some improbable upsets and heartbreaking losses mixed in. I don't see anything in his history that suggests that his team will get blown out on Saturday.

I agree completely. IMHO, this will be a much closer game that people are suggesting. Penn State is probably the 2nd most talented team in the conference and Ohio State will get Penn States best shot so they better be ready for it.

Ohio State leads the all-time series 20-14.

The two teams played only sporadically before PSU joined the (then) Big11Ten.  They have played every year since PSU's first year competing in this conference in 1993.

Prior to PSU joining, they played eight times with PSU holding a significant 6-2 edge:

  • PSU won the first four, all in Columbus in 1912, 1956, 1963, and 1964.
  • Ohio State won both of a H&H in the mid '70's (75&76).
  • Penn State won in Columbus in 1978
  • Penn State won in the Fiesta Bowl at the end of the 1980 season.

The Buckeyes were on the short end of a 63-14 beatdown in 1994 but Ohio State still managed to win three of the first four conference games.  Furthermore, Ohio State won eight of the first 12 conference games to even up the all-time series by 2004 at 10-10.

Penn State took the lead back with a win in 2005 then Ohio State tied the series back up in 2006 and took the lead for the first time with a win in 2007.  Penn State tied the series back up in 2008 (12-12) but then Ohio State won two straight to take the lead for good.

Ohio State has won six of the last seven but despite usually having a better team and sometimes a substantially better team all but three of those wins were by one score.  In fact, the last three games were decided by a combined total of five points.  The last seven games (reverse chronological, most recent first):
  • tOSU by 1
  • tOSU by 1
  • PSU by 3
  • tOSU by 28
  • tOSU by 7
  • tOSU by 49
  • tOSU by 12

tOSU is due for a tight game

this could be the one

actually would probably do the Buckeyes some good with "the game" looming

I think we underestimate how tough it is to play two really good teams back to back.    If they get by PSU, I could see them laying an egg in A2.

Also, the last 3 games have been margins of 1 poin, 1 point and 3 points, with PSU covering the spread as an underdog.  PSU seems to do well at figuring out how to slow the Buckeye offense better than most.
Lastly, forecast is for rain/ snow.    I see a low scoring game with Penn State easily covering the spread and maybe more.

Try 3
If things go well the Buckeyes are about to try 5:
  • vs #9 Penn State with Gameday, Big Noon, and the BTN show all in attendance and the B1G-E Championship likely on the line,
  • at #12 Michigan with an undefeated season on the line in a humongous rivalry game where they can salvage their season with an upset win
  • vs #11/14 Minnesota/Wisconsin (the actual opponent will likely be top-10 by the time this happens because they will have defeated the other and at least two teams ahead of them (PSU, M) will have lost.
  • vs CFP #3 (likely Clemson) or #4 (who knows), CFP semi-final
  • vs CFP #1, #2, #3, or #4, CFP NCG

I'm having a tough time envisioning this as a close game regardless of how it has played out in recent years.  PSU has only outgained its opponent in 5 of the 10 games its played.  They had more 1st downs than their opponent in 4 games, less in 5 games and tied 1 game.  Those numbers are staggering for a one loss team.

To their credit, they don't turn the ball over much and excel with chunk plays.  They are a good team, but if OSU is what they appear to be, this one ain't gonna be a game.

Can't call the CFP games "in a row" with the regular season and conference championship.  There is a month of recovery and preparation before them.

This series has produced some of the very best, knock down drag out, come from behind, big play, drama the college football has seen over the last few years

I hadn't realized all of this.

I just get the feeling that PSU is living on borrowed time and it is about to end.  Back on October 19 about half-way though the second quarter against Michigan the Nittany Lions were ranked #7 in the nation and up 21-0 against a stout opponent.  Since then, here is what they have done:
  • Got outscored 21-7 over the last 33 minutes against Michigan at home.
  • Beat Michigan State 28-7 but this is an MSU team that hasn't held an opponent below 28 points since Northwestern way back in September.
  • Lost to Minnesota.
  • Struggled mightily with an Indiana team that Ohio State obliterated.

As an Ohio State fan I feel like I should be nervous but I just can't see PSU keeping up.
