He only got six games after getting within 3 points of a NCG.

Other coaches saw that.
I am a bit surprised Matt Campbell took the job for the reason you point out. I would rather have job security and ample money like he had at Iowa State, rather than even more money with less job security which he will have at Penn State.

hell, if it doesn't work out, Matt will be able to retire with the huge buyout clause

Hes a good hire, its just weird it took this long, and they wasted a whole recruiting cycle

I realize if you made $5million, even in one year, as he does at Iowa State, every year, you could retire after one year of work. I would rather have $5million per year as an annuity with expectation of increases, and a Kirk Ferentz type future employment security, than $8 million or more for 3 years and no job security. I didn't think Matt Campbell would take short-term guaranteed fame and guaranteed short term fortune, over long term millionaire job security and historical adulation in Ames, while his new team has been stripped of freshman recruits.

I don't think Campbell is a big transfer portal guy, but sometimes one must adjust.

well, it's an 8-year contract, so if fired after 3 seasons, he'll get paid for 8

$8 million x 8 = 64, almost as good as $5 million x 13.  Why work a stressful 13 more seasons if you can work 3 and retire?

I'd guess he realizes his ceiling in Ames.  Tough to compete with the oil money in Texas

This, Penn State's could have done alot worse and considering how it dragged out they were fortunate. I wonder if their target got either cold feet or a raise or perhaps their Admns are rubes that misread the tea leaves. They maybe felt they were the same brand they were 20 yrs ago and there would be a line forming and fighting at the door to get in

I'm guessin the top 23 choices had Jimmy Sexton as an agent and Campbell did not

You or me could get by handsomely on a half season of either contract, provided you don't keep swapping out plastic fantastics and ordering on line for cuban coffin nails

I'm quite reasonable on the on line cuban coffin nails - never paid more than $10/stick

Campbell finally moving on to a name-brand program years after being the 'hot' name reminds me of one of those actresses waiting to do Playboy in their 40s.
