Kris: Is it your impression that Dana left the cupboard in Morgantown somewhat less than well-stocked?
Oh, absolutely. But unlike a lot of fans I’m not particularly bothered by that.  I don’t necessarily view it as a coach’s job to leave the next coach with a wealth of talent. Some people do and that’s fine if they feel that way.  If you can and do, then great, but the timing doesn’t always work out like that.

Forgot he left in January,Mountaineer fans glad, mad or indifferent?
I’d say almost everyone is glad or indifferent.  He was fine, not terrible, not great.  The feeling was that if he couldn’t win the Big 12, or at least get to the CCG with last year’s team then it probably wasn’t going to happen for him here.  But if you’re W-L performance is going to be just ok then you better be good at the off the field stuff and Dana was terrible at that stuff.

Single bachelor who was known for his penchant for drinking too much.  Didn’t like to glad hand donors or help raise money.  Had kind of a weird, awkward personality.  Was short with support staff and the local media. Never tried to really be a part of the community.  In fact, Don Nehlen recently said on a podcast that every time Dana had a couple of days off he’d fly to Houston.  Said most people didn’t know that but it was common.

Brown is already 10x better at that stuff than Dana ever was.  Of course, winning is what he’ll be judged on but he’s a much better face of the program.

It seems to say that he knew he was leaving before last year's recruiting season.

Damn UW in that witch's weather in S.Fla might melt
I think that makes the fact that it's a night game on the road a lot more palatable. After 7PM, could be 10-degrees cooler than midday.

I don’t know if he knew that far in advance although I think some feeling out conversations had started to take place. Dana had to see how 2018 played out first though because it could have meant a nice payday in Morgantown.  Dana wanted a contract extension with more money and years.  If he would have had a bigger 2018 (conference title, top 10 finish, NY6 game, not necessarily all 3 but some combination) then he almost certainly would have gotten it.  But WVU faded in its last two games and he had no ammunition.  But with UH firing Applewhite and Dana’s relationship with the big UH donor he could then use that leverage to try and get an extension. And he did indeed try but Shane Lyons didn’t take the bait.

Like I said on here back in January this is a very rare win/win for everyone involved.  Dana got more money and got to go back to a city he seemed to genuinely like and he gets a reset on his coaching career. WVU got one of the up and coming stars in the coaching ranks and got to save some money while doing it.  Everyone sort of knew this year was a rebuilding year but with a bigger 2018 you can live with that. The natives were getting restless and Dana’s seat was about to get warm.

He got out without the indignity of being fired and WVU didn’t have to spend millions buying his contract out.  In fact, UH had to pay his buyout clause to get him.  I don’t any ill will toward him but I can’t really say I’m actively rooting for him either.  I have to admit if he finally beats Oklahoma wearing a UH visor it will make me a little sick.

I'll call Lincoln Riley and urge him not to let Dana make you sick!

From his time at Oklahoma State, I concur with your critique of Holgy further upthread.
