I would lean to PSU in this one, really, Arky had a nice season, but PSU barely lost some big games.

They have one common opponent, which means little.

Sean Clifford announces he's using COVID to get a 6th year and he's coming back to Penn State.

He really impressed me with his toughness this year.  If his O-Line can protect, I think he can have a big year.  This is huge for PSU as they needed one more bridge year before Drew Allar will be ready to start.

Allar was the QB of my local HS this year and WOW, what a prospect!

I REALLY think that PSU is poised for a MAJOR improvement next year.  They went 7-5 this year but the losses were:
  • In OT to Illinois
  • By a FG on the road to the team currently ranked #10
  • By a FG on the road to the team currently ranked #15
  • By four at home to the team currently ranked #2
  • By nine on the road to the team currently ranked #6

So four of their five losses were to teams ranked in the top-15 and three of their five losses were on the road.

Their conference road games this year were:
  • #6 Ohio State
  • #10 Michigan State
  • #15 Iowa
  • nr but very good Wisconsin
  • Maryland
Their conference road games next year are:
  • Michigan
  • Purdue
  • Indiana
  • Rutgers

Also their cross-overs go from:
  • at Wisconsin
  • at Iowa
  • vs Illinois
This year to:
  • at Purdue
  • vs Illinois
  • vs Minnesota
Next year.

My point being that Penn State's schedule gets LOTS easier next year and they were already THISCLOSE to being a great team this year.  If they improve even by a miniscule amount, that improvement and their easier schedule could EASILY result in an 11-1 year.  It isn't crazy to imagine them going 12-0.  It also might help them that next year's schedule is surprisingly front loaded.  Of their four November opponents next year (IU, UMD, MN, RU) only MN finished above .500 in the league.

They have a HUGE October next year.  It starts with Ohio State in Happy Valley on October 1 then Michigan in Ann Arbor a week later.  Then they come home for Illinois then take a week off then host Michigan State on October 29.

yeah their schedule gets a hell of a lot softer next year plus having Clifford back for his 6th year should mean they'll be a top ranked team as long as Franklin doesn't blow it, as he's wont to do.

OUTBACK BOWL
Penn State Nittany Lions (7-5) vs. #21 Arkansas Razorbacks (8-4)
Saturday @ NOON - Tampa, FL - espn2
It's hard to remember now, but Penn State began the season 5-0, with a road win at Wisconsin, a home win over a ranked Auburn team, reaching #4 in the polls, and leading fellow top 5 Iowa 14-3 in Iowa City.  Then Sean Clifford got hurt, and even though he eventually returned, the season went off the rails in a hurry.  The Nittany Lions lost 5 of their final 7 games, the wins coming against lowly Maryland and Rutgers.  They had chances.  They had Iowa beat until they lost their quarterback.  They lost in overtime to Illinois.  They had one blown coverage in a home loss to Michigan.  Three plays from being 10-2.  But 7-5 is 7-5, although the 5 opt outs they had for the game does show how much talent this team had.  Four defensive starters, plus stud wideout Jahan Dotson are all skipping this one.  Losing Dotson is particularly troubling for an offense that struggled to run the ball for the second consecutive year, and now has to lean heavily on Parker Washington, without arguably the conference's top receiver.  Washington came on late, recording at least 4 receptions in five of Penn State's final six games; and tallying his only two touchdowns against an FBS opponent in their final two games.  With an extra month to rest and heal, I do think we will see the best Sean Clifford we've seen since September.  As good as the Penn State defense has been this year, I do think that will be the bigger concern.  It's not just the four defensive starters opting out, but defensive coordinator Brent Pry, who has been James Franklin's coordinator for all 12 of Franklin's head coaching seasons, since 2011 at Vanderbilt, has left to take the head coaching job at Virginia Tech.  I think Kendal Briles, and a veteran quarterback in K.J. Jefferson, with a month to prep, could put together a game plan that could cause problems for a Penn State defense which is green up the middle due to the opt outs.  Jefferson had 10 carries for 73 yards against Texas; 20 for 85 against Ole Miss; and 18 for 66 against Auburn.  I think he may hit 100 here.
ARKANSAS 27, PENN STATE 23

Why do the refs always need a convention to call intentional grounding?
