Other P5 Championship races heading into Thanksgiving weekend
« on: November 23, 2021, 11:42:10 AM »
Shortcut view:

  • ACC:  Pitt vs Wake, Clemson, or NCST
  • B12:  OkSU vs OU or Baylor
  • B1G:  tOSU/M winner vs UW, IA, or MN
  • P12:  Utah vs Oregon, OrSU, or WSU
  • SEC:  UGA vs Bama

ACC:
Pitt has clinched the Coastal division as they are two games ahead with only one game to play.  In the Atlantic division the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest are a game ahead and they beat NCST but lost to Clemson who are a game and a half game behind respectively.

Wake has the worst team in the division this weekend (BC) but it is on the road and if they lose they'll fall into a tie with Clemson.  NCST could join that tie by winning at home against UNC.  Thus there are three relevant possibilities:
  • Wake wins:  Wake plays Pitt in the ACCCG.
  • Wake and NCST both lose:  Clemson plays Pitt in the ACCCG (because Clemson beat Wake H2H and this is a two-way tie).
  • Wake loses and NCST wins:  NCST plays Pitt in the ACCCG.  In this case the three teams are each 1-1 against each other (Wake>NCST>Clemson).  The ACC's next tiebreaker is divisional record which eliminates Wake because their other loss is to BC from the Atlantic Division while Clemson's and NCST's other losses were to Pitt and Miami from the opposite division.  Thus Clemson and NCST revert to the two-team tiebreaker and NCST wins.

B12:
The winner of Bedlam will be 8-1 and #1 in the B12.  If Oklahoma wins then these two teams simply play again a week later in the B12CG.  However, if OkSU wins then Oklahoma falls to 7-2 where they would end up in a tie with Baylor if the Bears beat TxTech.  Oklahoma, unlike OkSU, would lose that tie.  Thus the B12CG will be a rematch of Bedlam unless OkSU and Baylor both win this weekend in which case the B12CG will be OkSU vs Baylor.

P12:
Utah has clinched the P12-S as they are two games ahead with only one game to play.  In the North division the Ducks of Oregon are one game up but they face one of the two teams that are a game behind them this weekend.  If Oregon wins they play Utah in the P12CG.  If Oregon loses they and OrSU will both tie at 6-3 and WSU could join that tie by winning the Apple Cup.  OrSU would win the two-way tie and face Utah in the P12CG.  In the event of a three-way tie the teams would each be 1-1 against each other (OrSU>Ore>WSU).  The P12's next tiebreaker is Divisional record.  WSU wins that because both of their other losses are to P12-S teams.

SEC:
Georgia has clinched an outright SEC-E title.  Bama has clinched at least a share of the SEC-W and will win the tiebreaker if a tie occurs so they have secured the SEC-W spot in the SECCG.  Ole Miss would win a share of the SEC-W only if they win the Egg Bowl and Auburn wins the Iron Bowl.

No idea and I just want to point out that OkSU is not merely "alive", they've clinched.  The three thus have varying levels of control:
  • OkSU has clinched.
  • tOSU needs a win.
  • OrSU needs a win and a WSU loss.
