I eat out more than most people for several reasons.
- I hate cooking and am bad at it (so I'd risk ruining my meal). It's too time-consuming and just cooking for yourself isn't as efficient or cost-effective, anyway. I also don't own a car so shopping is a hassle, since the nearest grocery store is 5 blocks away.
- I can afford it. I'm quite frugal otherwise. I'll even be able to max out my retirement accounts this year (401k and Roth IRA), so I'm hoping the market will crash sooner than later. Even then, I try to order things that are on special or relatively cheap (I don't go to high-end places, either, as I'm not a foodie). If I can't finish my meal I box the rest, too.
- It's probably the most social thing I do. I've met some interesting people that I wouldn't have otherwise. Dining alone actually isn't that unusual in DC, though I also meet up with people for dinner, as well.
I'm sure this will change if I can finally get into a serious relationship (especially once you live together), which I'm actively pursuing now that I finally have some stability in my career.
