Makes me happy that SFGopher still has a soft spot for the Badgers. Ironically (?) while SFIrish holds it against UW that he didn’t get in there, he has no hard feelings. Minnesota may beat it out of him, but it hasn’t happened yet. Parenting win.

To be clear, in the Border Battle games his loyalty is firmly rooted in Minneapolis. As it should be.

(1) to donate enough to UW to have that matter would take the kind of money the football team cares about, not the kind of money mere mortals have. They literally give a presentation to alumni about this very thing every year. (They pretend there's no donation that matters, but I've been around long enough to know that there is a threshold at which anyone gets special consideration.)

(2) No, he was never interested in ND. Too Catholic, and too private for his tastes. He doesn't love pretension...

(3) And it wouldn't have mattered because if Wisconsin was a stretch, ND was on a different planet. SFGopher is a real smart guy--smarter than me--but he didn't cover himself in glory in high school. He waited until his junior year to even try a little, and his senior year to really try. That doesn't get it done in today's college application market. No worries, he's happy where he is--and so are both of his parents.

We have this evening a free symphony in the park which we enjoy a lot.  We can walk to it.

ASO Returns To Piedmont Park In September | Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

In December we'll be in France with an ASO group going to various concerts in Paris and then one in Monaco being conducted by our music director, who is a French female.
They did a nice job previously with a trip to boston to see her conduct the BSO, though it was really cold.

My wife is getting excited about our upcoming cruise, NYC to Barcelona.  We've never done a "repositioning" cruise before, there is a stop at Gibraltar.

The good thing about living very far away from my alma mater is that I don't have to worry about my wife/kids being/becoming fans of our rival school.

Wife has a soft spot for UCLA (did some summer school there, graduated UCSB which isn't exactly a sports school), and obviously my son will be at Cal.

Don't know where my daughter will end up, but IU and ND are not even on her radar at this point. And I don't think she'd voluntarily move from SoCal to Indiana if she can avoid it.

The free symphony was quite enjoyable, very large crowd.  I might have consumed too much wine after.  They host a pretty nice open bar and buffet for "patrons".

But without Patron.  They did have that Texas vodka though.  I stayed with wine.

This made me happy Saturday, but I guess today too, so here goes...

I mentioned we got YTTV's sports package this year and I had problems with it only offering me ESPN Unlimited channels.  I said it appears to have no guide.  But I figured out that it actually does, it's just that you can customize the guide and it defaults to no channels selected, so it appeared to not have one.  For whatever reason, the FireTV app does not show the option to change that, so I didn't know it was a thing.  But I was using my phone to pull up YTTV to check something, and I discovered on the phone app the "Customize Guide" option was present.  So I put in the channels I wanted, and things got way easier this weekend.

I still don't understand why clicking on some games doesn't give me the option of all channels it's airing on, as it's supposed to.  But at least with the guide I can force it to go to a particular channel if the home menu is only offering me ESPN Deportes/Unlimited.

Thus, I could watch games in English this week, and no weird, silent skycam feeds.

Oh, and for an unknown reason, the ESPN app finally accepted my provider credentials, after several years of not working, and I was able to catch our Week 2 game for the first time in 4 years.

Granted, I had to watch it with one eye on my phone since Texas/Ohio State was on the living room TV, but still.

Sounds like you need another living room TV!

After years of telling us how disinterested he is in CFB/LSU football he hates it so bad he watches one game on his phone of LSU vs LSOP and one on the main TV.
Uh huh.

LSOP?

The Longhorn/Buckeye game would've been on the TV regardless because my wife is a big Texas fan.  That has nothing to do with me one way or the other.

But I've never said I wouldn't watch or have no interest.  I said plenty that I don't like where the game has gone and I can't draw the same enjoyment from the game anymore--or heartache.  Crap seasons don't drag me down the way they used to, and I imagine a good season wouldn't elate me either.  That's different than not being interested.  I don't like Lane Kiffin, but I'm interested to see what team looks like under him.  I don't give a rat's ass about a single NFL team and have no emotional investment in any aspect of it, but the games interest me and I do look forward to the season.

I guess you missed my recent Week 1 post about how I still love to watch that stadium, and those uniforms, even if I don't know the players' names and it doesn't represent the same things I used to love.

I'm pretty sure it's not because I'm old or because the team has been mediocre or poor.  I remember details of many awful seasons, so it's not just bad seasons or failing memory.  No, the fact that I vividly recall seasons up to the point that the sport just started leaving me behind signifies why I haven't cared enough to remember these games, even though I still watch them.

So by this time next year, I don't expect to necessarily remember these games or their results, but at the moment I can say that at the time I watch them, they'll probably be "interesting."
