My wife and I took a short trip, just 13 miles, to Delaware County's "Morris Wildlife Area." I had never been there before. I told her I wanted to hike, even though it had rained most of the day. I didn't tell her where we were going and neither of us had been there before today. As I write this two hours later, my socks are still drying out.
It was uplifting to hike in Delaware County and spend time in the timber on a well-maintained trail. The dense timber is interspersed with prairie areas the county is restoring through cutting and controlled burns to remove undesirable box elders and eastern cedar trees. Because it is a public hunting area, the timing was perfect for hikers, as the primary hunting seasons have not yet begun.
It was uplifting to be out in nature.
When I travel to Arizona to visit my family of origin, I always hike with someone from my family in the scrub desert, which I greatly appreciate (my wife does not fly, so I am celebrating life with my original family).
Here in Delaware County, Iowa, my wife and I just walk in town. The trip I initiated today was a welcome departure from our routine that added interest to our daily life. The little woman really enjoyed it. We have been married 36 years. The day trip today might have bought me another anniversary [fingers crossed].
