Yeah, it's hard... NucE is a fairly small field right now. Generally the sort of field where they just need to keep new graduates coming out to replace the old dudes retiring out...

There's a lot of hype that it might be a field with a lot of promise as nuclear energy is basically non-emitting from a carbon sense, and given that data centers are a huge potential near-term power consumer that would be well-served by nuclear. And then a potential ICEV->BEV transition that might both increase electricity demand while also smoothing out base load (since many owners charge overnight during non-peak hours).

Either way, I think he'll figure it out.
Plus, you can probably go into a lot of kinds of interviews with that degree and impress.

That degree will allow multiple opportunities and many fields.

Due to the AP, I tested out of freshman calc and when I took multivariate, it was the class designated for the "advanced" kids.

So it wasn't just the run of the mill engineers who had completed first year calc and then had to move on. It was the nerds of nerds.

There was a 12 year old in that class. His mom would drop him off for class every day.

I think I would have preferred the multivariate calc class for the normies.

I did the same, and found myself in a weird spot. I would’ve liked to retake second semester calc just to feel really solid, but that was the engineering school weed out class, and that seemed like trouble.

So I took multi-variable and was irritated because the professor was in his own world and every day went off book because he was interested in infinite dimensional calculus (a change that isn’t that hard in theory, but not cake for the 18-year-old mind to grasp). I ground out a B, on my way to a non-stem future.

It didn’t help that I also did accelerated chem, and my future engineer lab partner showed up still drunk on three hours sleep for a Friday lab and was MUCH better at it than I.

My friend who was a Physics professor at Tech said a lot of their graduates (PhDs) go to work for "Wall Street".

...

Either way, I think he'll figure it out.

My guess is someone will come recruit him before he even has to look long or hard.  While it's true that everything I can see on a ten-year outlook is basically flat (not including salary), the more telling thing I'm seeing is just how few qualified people "we" are turning out for those jobs.  Looking at the retirement rate in conjunction with the grad rate is telling me something.  He's going to get some great offers and the only thing to consider will be, does he want to move wherever (looks like CA and VA are the hottest spots as of right now).  And of course, what the others said is true.....he'll have even more options outside of NucE if he doesn't like the first options.

My $0.02....that's just the baseline scenario.  In reality, any technology development "we" don't see coming, or maybe policy changes from government, potentially puts us in a bubble, and suddenly there's a need for a lot more jobs to be filled, but the number of projected graduates isn't going to change within just a few years, and there's a mad dash from every company in the space to trip over each other to offer $215k starting out, with stock options and new car for kicks.

These numbers and models are quite fascinating.  I'm glad I looked this up, because we don't have that degree, and the forecasts are very different than what I'm used to looking at.  The number of graduates alone makes this a much different beast.

I've advised my daughter to take, in college, anything that's needed as a building block for her major.  This, rather than accept AP credit.  It just puts you in a far better place.

For her this is specifically Chemistry.  She's placed out of it, but it's important for her animal science major, it's a prereq for later more advanced classes, so she's taking it anyway.  She went ahead and took the AP credit for English Lit, History, and other stuff that it part of the curriculum but not exactly necessary for her major.

Well what made me happy-- yesterday we did "Move-In Phase I" for my daughter, into her dorm at Texas A&M.  Her roommate (who is also her best friend since kindergarten) is finishing up her summer travels and won't move in until Friday, and my daughter didn't really want to stay there alone for the next couple of days, so we brought her back for 3 more nights at our house before she makes her final move to college.  Luckily College Station is only 2 hours away and it's an easy drive without much traffic.

So we did the vast majority of the moving yesterday, including all the furniture pieces and appliances she'll install into the room (dorm fridge, Ikea cube-type organizers, bathroom organizer furniture, shelving units that mount to the bed frames, etc).  Plus all of her clothes and electronics and everything else she absolutely must have.  If filled the entire bed of my pickup plus 2/3 of the back seat.

But the deed is done, we cleaned the entire room before putting everything in, got all the stuff in, got it all set up and working, bed is made, closets and dressers cleaned and filled and organized.  She realized she has way more closet space than she thought so she'll take another round of clothing and shoes when we return on Friday, but 98.3% of the work is complete.

So now we'll head back on Friday for Phase II to help her roommate move in, do whatever final stuff is necessary (I anticipate a trip to Target or Walmart for forgotten "essentials"), then have dinner with her and her roommate's family Friday night, then head home on Saturday.

I'm really glad we're doing it in 2 phases though, it allowed me to separate the "work" priorities we handled yesterday, from the "goodbye" stuff that I know is going to kick my ass on Friday.

Probably won't be posting any of that on the "Happy" thread...

We're gonna party in College Station likes it's 1999... I guess. :)

Seriusly though, we're good friends with her roommate's parents, our daughters have been like sisters for the past 13 years since kindergarten, so we'll have a nice dinner with the kids somewhere in College Station on Friday evening then cut the kids loose to go do their thing, while we probably go to the Dixie Chicken for one last beer.  Then Saturday morning we'll make any final visits to Target or the grocery store or whatever and then say our final goodbyes.  It'll be a nice way to wind things down I think.

We're definitely headed back for at least one football game this fall, and she already knows she'll be back at least one weekend before Thanksgiving.

But I'm definitely gonna be a mess this weekend.

With the minimal drive, you might just find that she pays you an occasional surprise visit.

For a while, anyway.  Judging from my own experience and my oldest stepson, the more they settle in somewhere else, the less frequent those trips home become.

So no one will be at home guarding your suds stash???? Might have to send fearless on a snatch and grab mission - even if it's not Budwater.

Even worse than no one being home-- we're going to be leaving my almost-17-yo son home alone for the first time ever.  I've counted and marked all the booze.

Looking back, I really appreciated the English Lit classes I took in college. Mostly because it made me a more interesting person to have read some good books and I wasn’t trying to rush through anyway.
