I grew up lower middle to middle class in a very upper middle class suburb.

I suspect my parents wanted us to be raised around good examples.

Yeah, I grew up in a crappy area of Des Plaines, in the direct path of an ORD runway.

Most common words used in the house were huh? what?

Gangs, crime, run down properties

I didn't think much of it then. It's all we knew. We were happy.

Today I'm happy.

I grew up by a prison. Don't pick up hitchhikers was something I was told.

I was told the same thing - no prisons in the area

I grew up in the 'burbs but within 20-40 minutes of plenty of auto plants/steel mills and affiliated shops/industries. And a couple of Horse Tracks. Most of those jobs have been moved out or greatly scaled back. Race Tracks are still there

My Dad "worked" at the various horse tracks in and around Chicago.

There used to be 7 of them and he'd rotate depending on season and who "bought" the meets from the politicians.

There is only one left - Hawthorne in Chicago.
