Besides the football stadium, what impressed me most about my trip to College Station/Bryan for a game a few years ago were the A&M undergrads.

They were sober, polite, went to church, dressed modestly, had upstanding plans for their futures when asked, and almost no tattoos. Other than Auburn's undergrads, I can't really say that about other campuses.

For better or worse, most college campuses look like your local dive bar scene, a music festival, or China.
Wow, is this the grumpy old man thread?? :57:

boss just invited me to the Minnesoota Wild game tonight!

I'll be headed north in an hour or so.

Planning to take my daughter to lunch tomorrow before heading home

You wanna know which type of campus I'd prefer to go to?  And DID go to?  :)

That said, I was far more of a conservative straight arrow at the "liberal hippie school" UT-Austin , than my i s c & a aggie wife was at the "uber conservative God-fearing" Texas A&M.  She had a lot of friends that smoked pot and did mushrooms, and she did all that too.  She was in a sorrority and did all of the partying associated with that.

I was never in a frat, never tried pot or mushrooms or any other drugs-- still haven't.

So I'll just say that our two lived experiences don't necessarily match up to your observations, and I'll also say that at schools of 50,000 - 70,000 students each, you can find pretty much every type of student and student group imaginable.

Two different vibes, from what I could tell when I was there, but on the whole, both good folks, the type who might stop and assist if they saw you on the side of the road changing a flat.  Both included highly attractive female populations who seemed easily inclined to get in the truck of strange, hick-sounding, LSU-wearing interlopers.  So....maybe take a nickel out of the morals jar of each for that one.

Well I'm happy to say, my daughter has made her final decision about where she wants to go to college.  And her i s c & a aggie mother is REALLY excited about it.

Yes, she has indeed selected Texas A&M University as her college of choice.  She'll be studying animal science/pre-vet there, beginning in the Fall of 2026.

She worked hard and was admitted to several fine schools including the University of Texas, UC-Davis, NC-State, and Auburn.  Unfortunately (for me), Texas doesn't offer her major, so she was highly unlikely ever to enroll there.  She really just applied for me, and maybe also just to prove she could get in.

But ultimately she decided she'd like to stay closer to home, and also save us all a little money, so the Ags it is.

I'm really proud of her, and although it's tough to lose one of my kids to the enemy, I'm still delighted she's making this choice all on her own and is enthusiastic about her future.

So now, all the pressure is on the boy...

Man, Davis would’ve been an interesting (pricy) one, and NC State is an underrated one coming out of state.

That said, from the couple of game days where I wandered College Station, good time down that way. People also probably sleep on how much is there. Congrats to her!

Maybe?  I mean, it's one of the very top animal science/vet schools in the country, regardless of geography, so the folks that know that field, are well acquainted with it nationally and internationally.

It became tough to justify going to an NC-State or UC-Davis, both of which accepted her, and getting the same tier of education for 3x-4x the cost.

All 70,000 of them?  LOL, just kidding.

In other news, I went to my dentist last week, checked out OK, then my PCP, my numbers look good, he suggested I see a dermatologist which I did today.  He said I have one smallish basal cell carcinoma on my chest, he too a biopsy, said it "probably" was nothing, would get back to me.  Everything else was fine, he hit some spots with LN2 whilst I was there.  His last name rhymes with mine, we joked about doctor X and doctor Y.

Congrats on the A&M college decision.  I know vet schools are VERY hard to get into.

After the derm guy checked me out, we had lunch at Petite Violette, dining al fresco, beautiful day.  My wife is coming around to liking the place "OK".  I think it's fine, but I'm a rube.  I should be outside, but I'm afraid of the UV .... not really.

The Vietnam memorial being built across the street is making progress, still a ways to go.

I aspire to have a time when we close the VA because there are no veterans needing care.

It's fun to watch this guy play baseball for my favorite team.  He made 2 spectacular plays, actually.

Livvy Dunne, Paul Skenes' girlfriend, posted a Paul Skenes-Bobby Witt Jr. meme after Skenes' WBC reaction to Bobby Witt Jr. making a spectacular play from short last night.

I just meant stuff in the town.

Did y’all visit Davis? That was the first school I looked at.

Ah sorry, didn't get your meaning.
So now I'm going to have to respectfully disgree. :86:

There's really not much to do in College Station.  I mean, there's the Dixie Chicken, and.... well...

I'm sort of kidding, there's a few other places.  I'm sure it's fine for a college town.

It's tough to compare, because I went to both undergrad and grad school in Austin, and did two long summer programs at Northwestern and the Air Force Academy.  So I'm probably unfairly comparing all other college towns to Chicago, Austin, and Colorado Springs, when it comes to "having cool stuff to do in your college town."

We didn't ever get a chance to visit Davis.
