Speaking of new cars, in early February I bought myself a new truck.  2026 Silverado.  5.3V8, 4x4.  This made me happy, hence the post here.

But, yesterday I finally got around to installing the DFM lock-out chip that keeps it in V8 mode all the time, and disables start/stop.  That made me happy as well, but grumpy because I had to do it in the first place.

Here she was shortly after I made the purchase.

I understand the start/stop dislike
why don't you want it to shut off 4 cylinders while cruising or coasting?

It wouldn’t bother me except these GM engines are well known for lifter failure and all sorts of other engine problems caused by AFM and DFM. In my last truck, also a 5.3, I started to have lifter issues around the 50k mark. I disabled the AFM and the issue went away.

After I did that, the mileage improved by 1 mpg. So it ended up being more fuel efficient without it.

My dads previous truck, 2008ish model, the engine cratered at just over 100k miles despite regular oil changes. Plus, I’ve known many people who have had the same issues with AFM engines.

You know what’s better for the environment ?  Well maintained engines that run dependably for 100’s of thousands of miles. Not gimmicks that are designed purely for the EPA’s test cycle that don’t translate into real world savings.

Whoa. Getting close to Grumpy Old Men in that last post.

Happy I got a new vehicle. Happier that I fixed something that annoyed me and is worse for the environment.

good to know.  My 2015 Silverado with 5.3 is at 107K miles - no issues at all so far.
I'm taking the work car in tomorrow for an oil change & transmission service - 156K miles
I'll ask my guy there in the Chevy dealership about the V4 mode on the Silverado

Hmm.  Chevy's AFM sounds a lot like that eTorque business I mentioned a while back on the RAMs.  It's a different technology, I'm sure, but I'll have to keep an eye out and an ear to the ground for long-term issues with eTorque.

Reminds me, I need to see if there is one of those gadgets available for my 2020 GMC with the 6.2 yet.  I have been lucky, as it's at 82K and still running fine.

My brother in law has the 2022 Denali with the same engine, and it blew up at 50K for that very issue.  However, his was new enough that GM replaced it for free--I'm sure they would wiggle out at this point for me.

It’s a plug in that year. Very simple.

I had my physical with the DR this morning, it went quickly, pretty uneventful, blood results tomorrow.

My doc is a pretty even keeled low maintenance kind of guy, answers questions well, etc.
