Everything We Know About YouTube TV’s New Cheaper TV Packages

YouTube TV has announced plans to roll out a series of new, lower-cost streaming packages early this year. These new, cheaper YouTube TV Plans represent a significant shift from the service’s traditional all-in-one base package, allowing users to select content tailored to specific interests without paying for unwanted channels. The initiative comes as live TV streaming services continue to evolve, responding to consumer demands for affordability and customization amid rising costs in the industry.

The core of this update involves more than 10 genre-specific packages, each designed to focus on particular categories of programming. This approach enables viewers to opt for slimmer bundles that could substantially reduce monthly expenses compared to the current base plan, which stands at $82.99 per month and includes over 100 channels. While exact pricing for the new packages has not been disclosed, the emphasis is on making them more economical, potentially appealing to cord-cutters who have been deterred by the escalating fees of comprehensive streaming services.

One of the most highlighted packages is the YouTube TV Sports Plan, which is expected to cater specifically to sports enthusiasts. This bundle will include access to major broadcast networks alongside dedicated sports channels such as Fox Sports 1 and NBC Sports Network. It will also encompass the full suite of ESPN networks, including ESPN Unlimited, ensuring comprehensive coverage of live events, analysis, and highlights. Subscribers to this plan can further enhance their experience with add-ons like NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL RedZone, which provide out-of-market games and focused football content. Importantly, the Sports Plan retains popular features from the main service, such as unlimited DVR storage for recording games and shows, multiview for watching multiple events simultaneously, key play recaps for quick catch-ups, and fantasy sports integration to track player stats in real time.

I wonder how much they can reduce the price for that.  My understanding is that the ESPN family of networks constitutes the majority of the total bill that providers pass on to us.

It sounds like a step closer to an a la carte service, which some here opined several years ago would never happen.

I'll believe it when I see it.  And by that I mean, significant cost reduction when cutting out portions of the offering.

What made me happy today was my bike commute. It wasn't even particularly different than it usually is. Even though it is mostly through "canyons of concrete and steel," it is just great. So there.

Jessie went away last summer, a couple of months ago
After all our time together, it was hard to see her go
She called me right up when she arrived
Asked me one more time to come
Livin on an LA freeway aint my kind of havin fun
I think Id rather be a cowboy
I think Id rather ride the range
I think Id rather be a cowboy
Than to lay me down in love and ladies chains

We were just beginning; it was such an easy way
Layin back up in the mountains makin songs for sunny days
She got tired of pickin daisies and cookin my meals for me
She can live the life she wants to, yes; it s all right with me
I think Id rather be a cowboy
I think Id rather ride the range
I think Id rather be a cowboy
Than to lay me down in love and ladies chains

Id rather live on the side of a mountain
Than wander through canyons of concrete and steel
Id rather laugh with the rain and sunshine
Than lay down my sundown in some starry field
Oh but I miss her in the mornin when I awake alone
The absence of her laughter is a cold and empty sound
But her memory always makes me smile
And I want you to know
I love her, yes I love her just enough to let her go
I think Id rather be a cowboy
I think Id rather ride the range
I think Id rather be a cowboy
Than to lay me down in love and ladies chains

well, if folks can cut out live sports (ESPN) there SHOULD be significant cost reduction

I just noticed UGA plays men's basketball and is 16-3, which is the most wins of any SEC team.  Huh.

Sure.  But it's historically been so expensive that providers wouldn't unbundle it.  Rather, all of the non-sports-watchers have subsidized it.  If they had allowed unbundling for non-sports-watchers, then the price would actually go up for those who wanted ESPN.

So I'm curious-- and skeptical-- about how they're proposing to get around this.

hay, if I can get all my sports and only save $10/month, I'm for it.
I don't watch the other crap

$82.99 is high IMO

What I'm saying is that historically, if they unbundled and stopped forcing all the non-sports-watchers to subsidize ESPN, you'd actually end up paying MORE than 82.99 per month.

The only way to unbundle it and your price for sports to actually decrease, would be for ESPN to take a massive pay cut. And maybe they will, but it's really not in Disney's nature to decrease prices over time.

At one time streaming services were cheaper than cable. I'm not so sure anymore. You need a seperate internet provider, then like four or five different streaming services if you are a sports fan. Might as well just get the cable/internet combo, and just miss the peacock games.
