Yeah, I wondered how that could be.  Did you dispense with your Ad Blu stuff as well?
You mean DEF, or urea?  Yes.  No DPF, no DEF.

Let's go with yesterday's "happy."

Terrible day outside, so it was inside time, so on the tube I got to watch Cam Young go from 1 down to 1 up on 17 & 18 of The Players, and then the USA beat the Dominicans in the WBC, with both lineups chock full of future HOF's.  It's been really fun watching usually ho-hum MLB players get stoked playing for their countries.  Joy of the game, pride for their country--they look like Little Leaguers hopping the dugout railing to run on the field and celebrate.

Yesterday happy-- warm weather and the season's first crawfish boil with family and friends over at my sister's house.

Speaking of car efficiency devices, I've learned that my new car's auto start/stop feature doesn't activate when the A/C temp is set to "Lo".

Which is where I always have it set.

So, it seems I don't have to worry about disabling it.

roads were good on the 4 plus hour drive to Kearney, NE.  and I saw a few sandhill cranes along the way

The whole WBC made me happy.  Bummer that the USA offense collapsed, but Venezuela deserved it, eliminated USA and Japan.  And watching how pissed the USA players looked watching Venezuela celebrate, I think this tournament is only going to grow

I don’t yet get the WBC, but it’s fine.  Hope it grows.

I haven't even looked up the results of basketball yet.  Wish the US didn't look like they were at the end of a long road trip.  I guess they kind of were, as the against Mexico, the Dominicans, and the Venezuelans all had at least 70-30 foreign fans in the stadium.

My Royals players absolutely shined in this deal, that's part of why I was so excited to watch.  Even a bunch of guys from last year killed it. Hope it translates to the regular season.

Thought it was weird that Aaron Nola pitched for Italy.  I read that he was eligible because his great-grandmother emigrated from Italy a bunch of years ago, but.....how much are you really tied to another country in that case?  And why would pitching for a country you've never lived in and to which you have only bare familial connections be enticing?  One of our former pole-vaulters, Mando Duplantis, competes for Sweden in world events like the Olympics, etc., but one of his parents is Swedish and he's held dual citizenship with the USA and Sweden his whole life, so that makes more sense.

But anyway, I heard Italy got good use out of Nola, so that makes me happy, I guess.  Would've been cooler if he'd been paired with Skenes for the USA.  I heard Skenes did well too, so I guess that's another thing that makes me happy.

Royals players Jac Caglianone and Vinnie Pasquantino played for Italy.  Both born and raised USA.  The guys that played for other countries just have to trace ancestry back, and just their last names seem to fit the bill!  Both of those guys aren't good enough (yet) to be invited to the US Squad, so they took the opportunity to play for Italy.  Michael Lorenzen is signed with Colorado this year, but has been in KC for the last few years, also played for them--and did very well until his last inning v. Venezuela Monday night.

MVP of the whole deal Maikel Garcia is at 3B, and future HOF Salvy was captain of the champs.  They had Avila throwing gas out of the pen, too, along with Zerpa, who was just traded to the Brewers for an OF, as that position were collectively terrible last year.  Kansas City had the best viewership ratings in the country, I've seen.

This is an interesting thing that I just saw an article on this I think over the weekend... The below isn't the same article, but it discusses the same thing:

https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/14/travel/italy-citizenship-law-restrictions-constitutional-court

Seems Italian law has long stated that if you're born to an Italian, you've a right to citizenship. So even if your great-grandparent(s) emigrated and arrived at Ellis Island >100 years ago, every descendant retains the right to Italian citizenship.

Last year, Italy changed this, and the CNN article is about a court ruling that recently upheld the law establishing the removal of this long-standing right. Apparently it could still have further legal wrangling ahead, because the constitutional court that upheld this law is not the highest court of the land... So we'll see.

But like you, I think it's weird when someone does this... It (referring to other sporting events) was even mentioned in the article:

Quote
Citizenship by descent has not always been so unpopular. At the Tokyo Olympics, 12% of the Italian national team
12% of the Italian national team were born abroad, including 10 in the US.

My own thought is that often you'll see this from athletes who can't qualify for the teams from their actual home countries, so they use this type of "loophole" to compete.

@betarhoalphadelta , @Wildcat4E , both of you raised the point about not being good enough to play for the US and so taking their opportunity for another squad.  Hard to think that fits in Nola's case, as he's the Phillies' ace.  Maybe there's still not enough room for him on Team USA, but damn.
