OT - What made you happy today?
« on: May 01, 2025, 05:30:23 PM »
These days, it might seem like good news is in short supply... So my question... What made you happy today?

I woke up 6:30 ish, made coffee, woke up some more, read and posted here.

My wife and I took a trip to a nearby state park and walked the trails about three miles or so.  We had a decent lunch at a BBQ place, got stuck in traffic a bit.  The world didn't end, no meteors hit, Trump didn't declare martial law, I didn't get deported.  I wrote some in my book, trying to get that restarted, had some pretty OK ideas earlier about where to go with plot.  I've had no alcohol since Sunday.  I may take a nap.

I'm not broke, all my kids seem to be doing well, the ones I know about anyway.  Some of them are planning to come visit us this year here, and in Hawaii, which is nice.  I get along particularly well with my stepson, we seem to understand each other pretty well, and he can fix about anything from a computer to a light switch to a car.

It wasn't today, but last night just after dusk I was doing driving lessons with my 15 yo son.  He nicely asked his sister if he could borrow her convertible for the exercise, and she conceded as long as I agreed to fill up her tank. :)

There were storms about 10-15 miles out and the weather had just cooled, with big clouds off to the side but not directly above, with a lot of sheet lightning mixed in between them.  We had the top down and were just cruising the streets out in my part of suburbia, almost no other cars on the road.  And my son said, "Dad, I think this is going to be one of those memories I'll have forever."

I won't go deep into details, but today was our internal company all-hands the day after earnings.

Our CEO was asked a question that was right in the wheelhouse of a topic I've published about, and his response basically quoted a portion of what I wrote. I know he'd been apprised of it, so I don't consider this accidental or coincidental, like he came up with the response on the fly. And a couple of colleagues agree.

It seems to coincide with some exciting job opportunities that I've just been given (i.e. voluntold I'm about to be doing lol), which makes me again think I've been positively noticed.

My son called me on the way home, and I got to the house, changed clothes, and grabbed the airpods.

Went out while chatting, skimmed the pool, checked my chemicals, then sat in a chair —- continued to chat, and watched the blue birds and cardinals eat from my bird feeders.

72 degrees and breezy.  Nice.

Edit: to add, my Dobie and Dobie mix laying on the deck at my feet, also enjoying the nice evening.

Thats cool.  You should treasure this period in your life.  Time goes by so quickly.  Seems like yesterday when I would go out on driver traing trips with my son.  Just another thing no one ever tells you about being a parent.  I must have done a pretty good job cause hes never been in an accident or even goitten a ticket.  Hell I probably had at least 10 by the time I graduated UT.  Course Id never tell him that.

Yesterday I heard my boss caught his tie in the paper shredder

And when I got home from work I practically hand fed the robbins which has been a spring/summer ritual since '01. Also spread out seed, chopped dried fruits - raisins/figs/dates/prunes/cranberries and anything I can scupper together around the back yard and watch small parties of cardinals, doves, sparrows, chickadees and host of others I recognize but can't identify emerge from the woods/park and have at it

This is an important thing to try and do daily, I think.  We often take so much for granted.

Reading this reminded me of my boys and myself.  Ans this little diddy popped in my head.
