Buddy Holly at the surf Ballroom in
Clear Lake, Iowa. This is the last known photograph of him. Waylon Jennings is on bass and Richie Valens on drums.
Jennings was supposed to be on the plane to their next gig, but at the last minute he gave his seat to Richie Valens, who was under the weather.
"I hope your bus breaks down," Holly teased Jennings as they parted ways after the show.
"Well, I hope your plane crashes," Jennings kiddingly shot back.
Waylon Jennings said he had survivor's guilt for the rest of his life.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Ivy Mike: First Successful Test of a Hydrogen Bomb (1952)
Years before the atomic bomb was developed, Edward Teller, Enrico Fermi, and other American nuclear physicists set their sights on developing a weapon with even greater destructive potential—the hydrogen bomb. Their designs would not be realized, however, until after the development of the A-bomb, which is needed to generate the temperatures required to initiate H-bombs' fusion reactions.

I wonder what the ratio of "regular flying" without injury vs " celebrity" flying with deaths is?  Seems like a lot of stars were lost to plane crashes/mishaps.
I may be overthinking it, but obviously the Buddy Holly/Richie Valens/Big Bopper was probably the most famous, but also Patsy Cline, Lynard Skynard, Aliyah, John Denver, SRV off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more, I just can't think of any.  Seems like a lot.  Reba McIntyres band minus her.

Imagine the litigation that would ignite in the current climate.

Damned lawyers.
I've heard that the "panic" was somewhat trumped up, it wasn't wide spread but the story went "viral" or whatever constituted viral and that people at the time knew it wasn't anything to worry about.  Basically a forgotten footnote, that in later years was embellished and trumped up.

I remember an interview years ago when Waylon told that story - very sobering. RIP to the Boys, just a little bit of talent on that tour - unbelievable. They played ballrooms, armories, halls, auditoriums, and theaters across the rural American Midwest. And the kids not only came to scream and shout but could afford it. That was Rock and Roll
:cool2:

Here is were the tour stops

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

First and Only Flight of the "Spruce Goose" (1947)
A few years before going into complete seclusion, millionaire aviator and airplane manufacturer Howard Hughes built and piloted the only flight of the Hughes H-4 Hercules, the largest flying boat—indeed the largest airplane—in history. He designed the seaplane as a troop and materiel transport for the US War Department and manufactured it almost entirely from wood because of wartime restrictions on the use of aluminum.

2 November 1962. John F Kennedy announced in a national TV broadcast that the USSR was dismantling missile bases in Cuba thereby ending the tense Cuban Missile Crisis.

private planes
There were 3 significant ones from my little area of the world.  Population of the 2 counties was around 7K.

Wealthy landowner/banker in his private jet on the way to Montana.
Bug Spray business owner, wife and 2 young daughters in a twin-engine he had no business flying
Retired doctor and passenger in a little single engine flying to a HS football game.

We just hear more about the celebs and it seems like more common with them, I think.

Speaking of dangerous hobbies, I would really like to get an old Honda Gold Wing.  But people are so distracted with their phones, and drive like they are in-freaking-vincible, that the fun would not be worth the risk these days.

I'm guessing there are too many small private plane issues that you don't hear about unless there's a celeb on board
