So you flunked history, err weird history?
Not me, History was my major and always my thing.

Been doing a deep dive on WWI lately.  Not sure there's ever been a higher level of insanity in nations sacrificing their own troops than Verdun in 1916.  The goal being to "bleed the Germans/French white."

Who the hell here would even note that besides you 🤪 when someone like Rudolf Diesel died on this date in 1913 he invented the diesel engine or Casey Stengel in 1975 or Henry Ford II in 1987 or Tony Curtiss in 2010 or Mac Davis and Helen Reddy in 2020. Maybe your Red Car has sprung a leak or is running funny ;D
Or did he?

As did I. But Purdue required someone to take one additional history class to get AP credit, so I took "The History of the Space Age".

Fun class for a nerd like me.

I didn't have to do that, but for some reason UT did require one soft science course.  I took sociology and discovered that there were actually very attractive females on campus.  Who knew?

the profs were all ROTC officers

after that deep drive you might want to read
Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World

Margaret Macmillan

Was not a history major, but my Phd program had a lot of history in it (1st and 2nd century Roman empire). Also, I regularly pick out a place in history and take a deep drive.  Past year has been the antebellum period.  I generally prefer biographies over actual history books, but both are in the agenda

Hurts reading it, On the worst day of the Battle of the Somme (July 1, 1916), 19,240 British soldiers were killed, out of a total of 57,470 British casualties that day.

Were their aristocrats to arrogant to learn from Fredricksburg/Gettyburg/Franklin and Cold Harbor 50 yrs earlier in our war between the states? And with the advent of even more rapid firing weapons than the Gattling Gun - that was used only a couple of dozen times and sparsely at that.

Up and Over, Up and Over, Up and Over ad nauseam - like a ghastly version of Groundhog Day. Hell, at least in 'Nam officers ordering that type of butchery  would get fragged

Engineers who don't study history are doomed to iterate it.

on this date............John D. Rockefeller became the world's first recorded billionaire on September 29, 1916.

Key Details of the Milestone
• The Date: September 29, 1916, marked the point when newspapers and financial observers calculated his massive net worth crossed the $1 billion mark.
• Source of Wealth: Even though the U.S. Supreme Court broke up his Standard Oil monopoly in 1911, his shares in the 34 independent successor companies (such as Standard Oil of New Jersey, or ExxonMobil and Chevron later on) soared in value.
• Legacy: Rockefeller gave away more than $500 million of his fortune during his lifetime to medical research, education, and public health, founding institutions like the University of Chicago and the Rockefeller Foundation.
