THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
The Collinwood School Fire (1908)
In one of the deadliest disasters of its kind in the United States, 172 children and three adults were killed when an elementary school caught fire in Collinwood, Ohio. Though the building's doors opened outward, they were fitted with regular door latches instead of panic bars, which hindered the evacuation. As the conflagration rapidly spread, many children became trapped.

Technically, he was Superintendent, I believe, which would now be called President, but not then.  And it also wasn't in Baton Rouge then.  But yep, he's considered the school's first prez.

You should read the dressing down he gave some faculty when they got excited about secession.  He told them they were idiots who were going to destroy themselves--in much more flowery and well-spoken words--and he was right.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
First Meeting of the Homebrew Computer Club (1975)
In 1975, computer hobbyists in Silicon Valley, California, decided to meet regularly to exchange ideas. The first meeting took place in a garage. Members of the club would go on to become some of the most influential players in the burgeoning computer industry, including, most notably, Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who formed their company the next year.

A buddy belongs to SNOB - Society of Northeast Ohio Brewers

Any way watched this last nite on the Old History Channel reruns - worth the watch IMHO. A balsy, dashing caper in 1971 of the plundering Lloyd's Bank in London. Same year DB Cooper relieved Northwest Orient Airlines of claiming 200,000 on their returns. Good Year for Mayhem - The Baker Street robbery was the burglary of safety deposit boxes at the Baker Street branch of Lloyds Bank in London, on the night of 11 September 1971. A gang tunnelled 40 feet from a rented shop two doors away to come up through the floor of the vault. And they had a look out on a building across the street with walkie-talkies

Evidently these sticky fingered sods had a sense of humor as there were pictures of notables in high society in compromising postions they left spread all over the vault floor :098:

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Real Madrid Football Club Founded (1902)
One of the richest and most valuable sports franchises in the world, the Real Madrid Football Club is also one of the most successful, having won dozens of championships over the course of its storied history. In 1953, club president Santiago Bernabéu Yeste, a former player, embarked on the strategy of signing world-class players from abroad, not only from Spain—a trend that has continued to fuel the club's success and worldwide popularity.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
British Parliament Votes in Favor of All-Elected House of Lords (2007)
In the UK, Parliament consists, technically, of the monarch, the House of Commons, and the House of Lords. The great power of the House of Commons lies, historically, in its control of government finances. However, the powers of the House of Lords have been negligible since 1911, when an act stripped the House of Lords of its veto power on money bills and on other bills under some circumstances.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Nelson's Pillar Destroyed by Explosion in Dublin (1966)
Built in 1808 and towering over the center of Dublin, Ireland, Nelson's Pillar was a massive monument to Horatio Nelson, Britain's most famous naval hero. It was controversial from the start. In 1966, Irish Republican Army members destroyed the pillar with a bomb. Irish Army engineers then removed the pillar's pedestal with a controlled explosion, which is said to have caused more damage than the original blast. The head of the statue was later stolen from storage.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Notorious B.I.G. Shot and Killed in Los Angeles (1997)
Seven months after rival rapper Tupac Shakur was gunned down in Las Vegas, Christopher Wallace—better known as the Notorious B.I.G.—was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. Although it has been widely speculated that Wallace was shot in retaliation for Shakur's murder in the culmination of a feud between members of East Coast and West Coast hip-hop record companies, both murders remain unsolved. Just weeks after Wallace's death, his new album was released.
