Ireland Legalizes Divorce (1997)
The culture of Ireland has long been strongly influenced by the Roman Catholic Church, to which most of the country belongs. Thus, until 1997, the Republic of Ireland had no legal provision for divorce—and though many couples were living apart, they were not free to remarry other people. Once the divorce legislation was passed, the number of separated couples in Ireland did increase but not dramatically.

NATO's First Military Action (1994)
Founded in 1949 by the US, Canada, and 10 European countries as a security pact against the Soviet bloc, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization did not actually perform any military operations for its first 45 years in existence. With the fall of the Soviet Union, however, its focus shifted to regional peacekeeping—and thus, in 1994, NATO forces took action in the Bosnian War. After the September 11 attacks, NATO invoked Article 5 of its charter for the first time in history.

Peace Corps Established (1961)
In his inaugural address, US President John F. Kennedy famously tasked Americans to "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Months later, he gave them the opportunity. Kennedy created the Peace Corps to promote diplomacy and counter foreign stereotypes of Americans by sending skilled volunteers to serve abroad, and since 1961, more than 200,000 people have served in nearly 140 countries.

Tilden Wins Popular Vote, Loses US Presidential Election (1877)
One of the most disputed presidential elections in American history was decided by a single electoral vote, which was likely awarded in an informal deal behind closed doors. Democratic candidate Samuel J. Tilden not only won the popular vote in the 1876 election, but secured 184 electoral votes to Republican Rutherford B. Hayes's 165—until a bitter, months-long political battle ended with Hayes being awarded 20 contested votes.

Significant Oil Reservoirs Discovered in Saudi Arabia (1938)
Prior to 1938, Saudi Arabia was not considered an oil-rich nation. Today, the oil industry dominates its economy, making up 90 percent of all Saudi exports. Oil was first discovered there in the mid-1930s by the US-owned Arabian Standard Oil Company, which became the Arabian American Oil Company. However, it was not until 1938 that a commercially viable oil field was found, yielding one of the largest supplies in the world.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY:

Charles Ponzi (1882)
Possibly the most famous con man in history, Ponzi is now synonymous with a particular type of ruinous investment scheme. By promising impossibly high returns on a "get rich quick" scheme, Ponzi attracted enough new investors to use their money to pay off old investors, which made his outfit appear successful and solvent. It was not. After a series of trials, he was deported from the US, but in at least one case in 1922, he was found not guilty.
