THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Swiss Guard Arrives at the Vatican (1506)
Though various units of Swiss Guards have existed throughout history, the most famous unit—and the only one remaining—is responsible for the safety of the Pope. Known for their colorful uniforms, the guards must be single, Swiss, and Catholic and must have completed Swiss military training. The first 150 Swiss mercenaries were invited to the Vatican during the reign of Pope Julius II. In 1527, 147 of the Swiss Guards were killed while helping the Pope escape

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
Principality of Liechtenstein Is Created (1719)
Occupying 62 square miles (160 sq km) between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein was formed when the Austrian family of the same name purchased the lordships of Schellenberg and Vaduz in the Holy Roman Empire. It became fully independent in 1866. Today, the tiny mountainous country has no airport, no military, and very little crime. It is best known for its financial industry but is also a leading producer of sausage casings and false teeth.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Serial Killer Ted Bundy Is Executed (1989)
In December 1977, Ted Bundy escaped from jail in Colorado—for the second time—and fled to Florida. There, he resumed a streak of murders that he had begun in 1974, killing 12-year-old Kimberly Leach, among others. He was soon re-arrested, convicted of several murders, and sentenced to death. In an effort to avoid execution, Bundy confessed to numerous killings and promised to reveal more information in time. Despite this, he was executed in 1989.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Grand Rapids, Michigan, Becomes First US City to Fluoridate Its Water (1945)
Around 1901, dentist Frederick McKay began to research why many Colorado residents' teeth were stained brown yet were also cavity-free. The culprit, as it turned out, was fluoride. Though it can discolor teeth in large doses, fluoride also prevents decay. Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first US city to experiment with adding fluoride to its water supply. The rate of cavities plummeted, and fluoridation became a national health policy.

I live in the part of Ohio that was originally the "Connecticut Western Reserve". Much of the land here was given by the State of Connecticut to their veterans of the Revolutionary War as compensation for unpaid wages.

On July 4 of this year, one of our town's celebrations of America's Semi Quincentennial (250th Anniversary) will be to lay wreaths on the three Revolutionary War Veterans' Graves in our town cemetery.
