THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Singapore Is Expelled from Malaysia (1965)
After more than a century of British rule, Singapore gained independence in 1959. Four years later, it joined with nearby territories to form Malaysia. However, racial and economic tensions arose, and two years later, the Malaysian parliament unanimously voted to expel Singapore. Despite being left unexpectedly autonomous with few defenses or natural resources, Singapore rapidly developed into an economic powerhouse.

That's an interesting story, to me, having visited Singapore briefly and then Kuala Lumpur the next day.  Singapore of course has nothing to commend it, intially, except location on the tip of a peninsula.  No natural resources of course, no military back then, and yet today it indeed is impressive.  I'm not sure how they managed it really.

There is an apparent fable that their big guns could not fire inland, only outward at ships, in 1941-2.  I've read this isn't true, but the big guns only had armor piercing ammunition, not HE, and large caliber AP rounds are useless against enemy land forces.  The  British defenders of course were poorly lead.

Someone might recall a naval "battle" that cost the Brits two capital ships.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Magellan Space Probe Reaches Venus (1990)
The first planetary spacecraft to be launched from a space shuttle, Magellan took 15 months to reach its destination, arriving in orbit around the second planet from the Sun in August 1990. It was then put to work generating high-resolution maps of Venus's surface and measuring the planet's gravity. Four years later, with its mission complete, Magellan plunged into Venus's tremendously dense atmosphere and disintegrated.

They’re not well publicized by the west but the Soviet Union had a really nice Venus exploration program, even landed a few probes on the surface and returned pictures. Of course, they only last a few minutes or hours in that hellscape. I read that years ago, before probes discovered it’s true nature, Venus was considered the best candidate for life or colonization due to its similar size to Earth and it’s also easier to reach.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Mayan Long Count Calendar Begins (3114 BCE)
The Long Count is one of the various ancient Mayan calendars that maintained complicated, cyclical measurements of time. It was intended to provide an accurate record of historical events and counts the days elapsed from a fixed starting point—calculated as August 11, 3114 BCE, the date of creation according to the Maya. Some believe that the calendar predicts the world's end on December 21, 2012, but scholars have widely rejected this claim.

August 11, 2013 - Omaha convicted spree killer Nikko Jenkins’ first victims were found on Aug. 11, 2013.

Jenkins killed four people between Aug. 11 and Aug. 21; Juan Uribe-Pena, Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Curtis Bradford and Andrea Kruger. That month, the Douglas County Sheriff warned Omaha “we have a killer on the loose.” Jenkins is on death row.
