This isn't true, the Mercury and Gemini boosters were both liquid fueled and didn't go to the Moon at all.
They probably used them in the escape towers.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY:
Malcolm X (1925)
Malcolm X was an African-American activist. His home was burned by the KKK when he was a child, and he joined the Nation of Islam in prison as an adult. Upon his release in 1952, he renounced his "slave name," Little, and took the surname X, representing his lost African ancestral surname. He became a minister and soon rose to prominence campaigning for black separatism, but he publicly broke with the militant Black Muslims in 1964 after a pilgrimage to Mecca.

FACT OF THE DAY:

Pirates probably didn't wear eyepatches because of a missing eye; it's much more likely that they were keeping one eye ready to see in darkness so that they could quickly adjust when going below deck.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Cartographer Abraham Ortelius Issues the First Modern Atlas (1570)
Prior to 1570, maps were often unreliable, illegible, and unwieldy. When Ortelius published his Theatrum orbis terrarium, it was the first comprehensive, easy-to-use, and fairly up-to-date collection of world maps. It drew from the works of 87 cartographers, all of whom were credited. Demand was immediate and persisted for decades, during which time dozens of editions were published in several languages.

January 17th, 1975 a lone F-15A was stripped of its paint, speed brake, flap actuators, radar and fire control systems, unneeded cockpit instrumentation, generators, redundant radios and anything that could be left on the ground.  Engineers even removed her Vulcan 20 mm cannon and all external pylons, leaving a super clean, slick, light and powerful F-15A Eagle that had only one place to go...UP like a bat out of hell!
The goal was to steal the crown from the Soviets that held the record for reaching the highest altitudes from a stationary start on the runway.  The MIG-25 "Foxbat," held the three highest record positions since 1973. Prior to the Foxbat, previous altitude records had been held by the USAF F-4 "Phantom"
F-4 "Phantom" since 1962.

Streak Eagle had one mission and that was to smash the "time to climb" records held by the Soviet Foxbat.
Streak Eagle was held in place at the end of the runway while hooked up to a hold-back bar as the pilot applied full afterburner.  The explosive bolt detonated, suddenly freeing the Eagle to accelerate down the active. Rotating after only 400 feet of runway, Streak Eagle pulled into an 80-degree climb while accelerating through the speed of sound. Like a homesick angel with her low fuel levels, bare skin and minimal equipment, sporting a thrust-to-weight ratio of nearly 2:1, she sliced through the lower atmosphere like a hot knife through butter. At altitudes, the Streak Eagle even managed to beat the climb rate of the Apollo Saturn V Rocket!
F-15 Eagle Decal
After the initial climb, the pilot kept a sustained 2.5G pull coming back over the base inverted at 32,000 feet.  Rolling out, the super slick jet then accelerating to over two times the speed of sound pulling 4Gs into a 60-degree climb.
Streak Eagle reached an altitude of 98,425 feet in just 3 minutes, 27.8 seconds from brake release and "coasted" on the highest attempt reaching 103,000 feet in altitude. The pilot in the attempt to utilize every last bit of energy kept Streak Eagle in its climb until airspeed bleed off to as little as 55 knots...only then pushing the stick forward and back towards the Earth. During the coast phase her engines had to be shut down before overheating or flaming out due to lack of air density.  During the descent phase her engines were restarted to allow a powered approach back to base.

F-15 was always my favorite of the 1980's fighter jet era (I know it was introduced in the 70's).

F-14 (Top Gun)
F-16 (Iron Eagle)

F-18 didn't really get any screen time in the 80's that I recall.

It's a testament to American engineering that they are building and upgrading those planes today.

That thing is amazing.  It first flew 73 years ago and was introduced into active service 70 years ago in 1955.  It is so old that it replaced leftover WWII B29's (there were a few intermediate B36's B47's, and B50's) but the B29 was still very much in service when the B52 was introduced.

They stopped building them 63 years ago (1962) and the thing is STILL flying.

Production figures:
  • 3,970 B29's (wartime production for WWII)
  • 384 B36's
  • 2,042 B47's
  • 370 B50's
  • 744 B52's
