That thing is amazing.  It first flew 73 years ago and was introduced into active service 70 years ago in 1955.  It is so old that it replaced leftover WWII B29's (there were a few intermediate B36's B47's, and B50's) but the B29 was still very much in service when the B52 was introduced.

They stopped building them 63 years ago (1962) and the thing is STILL flying.

Production figures:
  • 3,970 B29's (wartime production for WWII)
  • 384 B36's
  • 2,042 B47's
  • 370 B50's
  • 744 B52's
And some of them will be 90 years old when they are finally slated to retire.

90 fucking years old!!  Obviously the engines and avionics and other stuff has been upgraded, but the airframes themselves will be 90.

The exterior panels and aluminum ribs of my Airstream were in pretty much perfect condition 55 years after she was born, when I last saw her and sold her.  She obviously wasn't subjected to the forces of flight, but she also wasn't cared for in the same way these airplanes are.

Her steel frame and wooden subfloor, on the other hand, were pretty heavily rotted.  I had to replace a lot of the frame, and all of the flooring.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
World's Tallest Roller Coaster Opens in New Jersey (2005)
Reaching a height of 456 feet (139 m) and with a top speed of 128 mph (206 km/h), the Kingda Ka roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in Jackson, New Jersey, became the tallest and the fastest roller coaster in the world when it opened in 2005. It took both titles from Cedar Point park's Top Thrill Dragster, which was designed by the same company and is nearly identical.

Carson is a legend.

But Dave's show was funnier, at least for his first 10 years or so.

Yup Dave was close with Norm MacDonald who appeared on Dave's last show. He really was the only one who could hold a candle to Carson's Tonite Show. Late Nite hosts now will get you the sleep that you need. The last good ones went out the door with Dave,Conan & Craig Ferguson,IMHO
