Yeah my FIL almost never talks about Vietnam either.  He's incredibly well adjusted, a really great man, but he has no desire to recount any of it.

Never seen La Femme Nikita (I assume you're talking about the 1990 movie, and not the late 90's TV series, which I did see a little bit.)

That actress was a SMOKE SHOW.

That may or may not have been a big part of the reason I watched.

Ok, definitely "may."

I don't recognize her or that show at all, she's definitely cute though.  I completely missed a ton of TV shows and movies in the late 90s.  I've realized that, other than music, my pop culture knowledge of the late 90s is significantly less, than the 20 years before that.

I was a young professional who was traveling about 80% of the time, dating, and then getting married.  So I wasn't around for much TV, and a lot fewer movies as well.  What little time I had for entertainment was almost exclusively focused on sports, or going to the lake.

I sort of did the same thing from about 2002-2020.  I worked rotating shift work during that time, with no TiVO or whatever we had in that era (DVR I suppose).  Also, I was newly married with young kids.  The last show I watched with some sort of regularity in that era was "Lost", and I only watched the first couple seasons before I gave up (sounds like I didn't miss much, it just got weird).

There is a whole lot of TV that I just never saw in that era, but now I realize it was mainstay for millennials, and for old farts like me I probably wouldn't have watched anyways.

We started streaming around the mid-2010's, and I really got into Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and GoT, and watched the last few seasons via streaming.  We could even stream stuff at work the last few years I was working shift.

Same for my uncle who was the primary family participant in Vietnam.

FWIW, to answer MDT's question, yes, the 1990 French movie Nikita, not the later TV series, nor the American remake.

I just launched into 2 Apple TV series, one that's been around for quite awhile and I just heard about.

For All Mankind, an alternate history show about the space race, where the Soviets made it there first.

Your Friends & Neighbors--really dig Jon Hamm, even though I've never watched Mad Men yet.

I had high hopes with For All Mankind after the pilot episode, but after ep 4 or 5 or something like that I didn't continue it.  Didn't do it for me.  Haven't seen the other one.

I usually only cut Apple TV on when a new season of Severance comes out, and next time I do I plan to watch Pluribus, some kind of aliens show from the same guys who created Breaking Bad and spinoff Better Call Saul.

I've never been able to get into alternate history shows or books.  I'm fine with pure fiction, horror, fantasy, SciFi, and whatnot, but my brain just objects when I know there's  real history that doesn't match what's being presented.  I tried to watch the first couple episodes of For All Mankind and unsurprisingly didn't like it.

Your Friends and Neighbors, I liked.  It's fun and an easy watch.

I've seen Dogma and The Professional.  Never seen La Femme Nikita (I assume you're talking about the 1990 movie, and not the late 90's TV series, which I did see a little bit.)

This weekend I tried another "classic" I've never seen, Platoon.  I've been on a bit of a kick lately ever since Jaws, trying to go back and watch popular, well-known, or acclaimed movies from before my time.  It's quite a different tone and style than the slew of war movies that followed it some ~10ish years later, such as Saving Private Ryan, which it seems that a lot of war movies are still trying to borrow from to this day.  However, I thought it held up about as well as a movie from the 80's can.  Tom Berenger and Kevin Dillon's characters were truly hate-able and horrifying.

Speaking of, it was interesting to note how many of the actors in that movie are recognizable from other things.  Almost everybody in it went on to star in other things, seemed like.  Most notably for me, imagine my surprise when Dr. Cox from Scrubs was in a classic war movie.

It took about an hour longer to watch than the actual run time.  There was a lot of pausing while my wife recounted stories of veterans she sees (she works for a VA contractor, and Vietnam vets make up a good chunk of her patients).  She would see something that reminded her of stories they tell her, or things that she's treated vets for related to Vietnam, and tell me about them.  She also can't help herself, when she sees something in a movie like that, she acts as if they're real people and says stuff like "That guy probably died within 20 years from pancreatic cancer" or something like that.  But a lot of them won't hardly say anything about their time there and getting info pertinent to their medical claims is like pulling teeth, she says.  One of my uncles served in Vietnam, and he's kinda like that.  He's not angry, angsty, unstable, bitter, or noticeably messed up.....but he will not talk about Vietnam.
A friend’s dad said Platoon was the most realistic depiction of his experience. Not the commander stuff, but the one-sided perspective.

The Ringer a few years back did a podcast series about Vietnam movies. It was quite good.

Same. One of my colleagues loves it, but I just couldn't get into it.

Severence and Pluribus are both my speed. I have enjoyed Silo, but the first season was by far the best season.
