Similar but different, I can't imagine I'll ever be inclined to watch the new version of Harry Potter.  I just don't want to watch new actors playing those characters.

Welcome to my front porch.  The yelling at kids to get off the lawn commences every morning at 7 am sharp.

This is the killer on reboots for me.

You've discussed how you really just never could force yourself to like House of the Dragon, but really enjoyed Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, and I think that's an excellent example of what you're saying here.  I probably like House of the Dragon better than you do, but I certainly don't love it, and if another season never aired, I'd be fine.  Contrast that with KOT7K which I genuinely enthusiastically loved, and others seem to enjoy it quite a bit as well.

In fairness to HotD, I never gave it much of a shot.  There's different ideas on how many episodes you should give something before making a decision on it.  I only watched the pilot, or first episode or whatever you'd call it.  Arguably, I should've given it another episode or two to draw me in.  Since ep1 did not, and it seemed I just wasn't in the mood for more of what it seemed to be pedaling, I bowed out early.

That may or may not have been a mistake.  I can admit that I gave it a very short leash.

otoh, like you say, there's things like KOT7K which immediately hooked me.  So.....like....it's not totally off-base for me to expect a show to draw me in right away.

This is the killer on reboots for me.

The thing about the forthcoming Harry Potter is that it doesn't feel like it's been long enough for a reboot.  But, I don't have data on how much time has elapsed compared to other properties that get rebooted.  I'm getting old enough now for a lot of things to feel like "Hey, they just did that not long ago" (by which I mean, like, 20 years or something)

Well there were three separate major studio live-action multi-film Spider-Man movie franchises in under 20 years.

I'm not sure what that proves, I just still find it surprising.

Finished the short season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms last night.  I liked it quite a bit and found it a pleasant change from the OG Game of Thrones.  Actually, I liked GoT a lot, but Martin's nihilistic world wore thin on me after a while.  While the Seven Kingdoms world is the same and his underlying philosophy is still there--and it lead to some typical GoT-world moments I thought would've been better if the show would commit to a bit more traditional story-telling--it had a couple of strong protagonists that I found myself rooting for.  They were a nice contrast to the power-is-everything, the-strongest-rules ethos that generally pervades that universe.  The story-telling, acting, and directing were all superb, as per usual for that franchise.
I just finished it. Really liked the different perspective in the same world. It had a much lighter feel to it, without losing the grit and power dynamics of the original.

I suppose if nothing else it proves that Spiderman is an IP that's always had a very large following in the comic-book nerd world.  iirc, when I was a kid/teen, Spiderman was always among the highest selling comics.  Just an extremely popular character, so maybe that's why they can get away it?

Something that is materially different compared to Harry Potter, though, is that Marvel comics had several different Spiderman comic series.  Like, 4, I think, or something like that.  Amazing Spiderman, Web of Spiderman....some others.  While basically the same character, there were some differences, and the stories/history was different within those series.  I believe Toby McGuire's franchise was based on one comic series while Andrew Garfield's was based on another, thus why, for example, Toby McGuire's character natively shot webs from his body while Garfield's character shot webs from mechanical contraptions he built (I think that's right....it's been years since I've seen any of those).  That follows the different Spiderman versions their movies were based on.

With Harry Potter, you don't really have that.  There's just the one book series.  BUT, since the first movie was 25 years ago, and the last movie was 15 years ago.....it's just my old age creeping in, making me think "But they just did that!"  I guess the new generation of kids are primed and ready for their own version.

The only thing I can tell you for sure is that LOTR will get remade at some point, and I'm going to hate it.  Peter Jackson trilogy 4 lyfe.
