I'm going to suggest that you try Jaws. Yes, the cinematography is out of date, but the mechanical shark was hokey even at the time. The story is pretty solid: small town politics, fear of the unknown, good suspense, and an exciting climax. It's slow by modern standards, of course, but the characters are solid, between the small town sheriff, the small town mayor, the scientist, the fisherman, and the various townspeople it's a good blend. It's more suspense, with a little gore, than actually horror.

Maybe you'll hate it, but at least you'll know.
Just 2 notes on a tuba....and it works.

I'll always remember when I finally rented Jaws and watched it, because it was the same night that Pantera's Dimebag Darrel was gunned down in Columbus.

I suppose I selected that night's entertainment wisely.

Jaws.....actually never seen it, and kinda doubt I ever will.  My age group missed the event in real time, I never caught up with it on a Things To Do list or watch-this-for-cultural-curiosity's-sake, and now I suspect I never will.  I heavily suspect it wouldn't hold up for me and the main draw would be nostalgia, of which I have none related to it, so....
I think I'm in the age group you're referring to (46).

Watch Jaws. Not for the shark, for the story.

Jaws is a fun watch, even now.

Pretty sure I mentioned how, ever since we bought our house with a pool, my i s c & a aggie wife has wanted to do an outdoor screening of it whilst floating in inner tubes in the pool.  Last summer I made that happen, set up our digital projector and my outdoor blowup screen, bought a bunch of shark pool floaties, served bloody marys and other various blood/shark themed drinks and snacks, and had about 30 friends and relatives over.  It was a smashing success, we'll be doing Jaws 2 this summer.

It screams erotic thriller \n\ - a film, book, or television subgenre that blends suspense, crime, and danger with themes of intense sexual desire, obsession, and passion.

No, but Sean Penn does castrate himself at some point in the movie, iirc.

Oh man....JAWS.  For somebody like myself born in the same year it came out (1975) it stayed in pop culture for a long, long time.  The scenes/times shown in Jaws already felt dated by the early 80's, yet familiar.

The best part about Jaws is that they don't even really show the shark until about 1/2 to 2/3rds into the movie.  Up until then, it's all imagination, which I found later was due to the fact they had so much trouble with the mechanical shark.  It really builds.

Most of my childhood spent "swimming in the deep end" was usually accompanied by an eerie feeling I was about to get swallowed up from underneath.  Even in the city swimming pool.  Somebody would yell "SHARK" and everybody would scramble out, some with complete terror on their face.

Good times.

Creature from the Black Lagoon, 1954 is still fantastic for similar reasons.

Lest you folks think your opinions don't matter and that there's no point in putting them out in the world....  Y'all convinced me to give it a go.

We rented Jaws on Friday night.  Wife hadn't seen it in years, but said it was a favorite of hers.  She was a little surprised I'd never seen it.  She reminded me that her brother really likes it and says he watches it every several years, because she knows he and I have a lot of similar tastes.

I don't really care about the shark looking bad or any of that.  It was fine.  Which is how I felt about the movie in general.  It was fine.

I fell asleep for a good bit of the middle--granted, I was absolutely wore out Friday evening, so it may not say anything about the movie itself.  I enjoyed the beginning well enough.  I woke up to a really good scene, which for me, was the highlight of the movie, which was Quint, Brody and Hooper in Quint's boat getting drunk the night before the movie's climax.  He talked about having served aboard the USS Indianapolis and what he lived through, which I just happened to know a little bit about through dumb luck, because my paternal grandfather served in the Navy during WW2 in the Pacific theater, though not on the Indianapolis.  I thought incorporating a real-life horrific tragedy into the backstory of Quint's character was a good move on the movie's part, and like I say, it was a great scene.

The climax and ending were about what I expected.

Overall, I see the appeal, particularly if you watched it growing up.  I doubt I'll ever revisit it to catch the middle I missed, but I'm not sorry I rented it.

After finishing the book on Friday, I watched the Caine Mutiny with Humphrey Bogart. Good, old-times film. Bogart is great, no one else really is. Fascinating to see how they portray the love interest, who in the book is a real looker. Beauty standards have evolved since 1954.
