I'd be inclined to start to harry Potter movies, but my wife wants to read the books with them first, and they seemed to lose interest at some point
Rewatching with kids is an interesting experience. Mostly positive.

Re HP: what age when they lost interest? I know my kids needed a break, but enjoyed restarting when a little older. IMO books 4-7 are for a different aged audience than 1-3.

They started at ages 8 and 6, and made it somewhere into Book 4.  At probably 9 and 7, and lost interest, and have no desire to go back.  Granted they have rewatched Stranger Things like 5 times, and I couldn't make it through season 4.

Granted I tried the books, hated them, then watched the movies #1 through #3 on TNT before #4 came out, then circled back and read the books, and loved them.  Watched all of the movies, but have also never felt the need to re-read the books, or re-watch the movies.  I was studying abroad in England when one of the books came out, and we went to visit some friends in Cambridge.  Everything in the town shut down, except the Borders, which had a bar that only served Fosters (which I have have never had before or since).  We just read random books off the shelf, drank Fosters and waited for the book to be released.  By midnight we realized we were at the front of a line that went down the street, and got interviewed by Cambridge local news

I watched the final episode of season 2 Land Man and really enjoyed it.  I have not given up on it and look forward to season 3

I agree.  Book 4 has a darker tone from the opening chapter, iirc.  I noticed that when I read it in college, some years after it was written (I didn't start reading the books until after the first movie came out).

Later I saw the author herself say that she did not consider them "kid's books," rather they were books that featured kids.  In the context of elaborating that "I intended a darker story than I'd deem appropriate for young children" (my words, paraphrasing whatever she said).  Though in my experience, most people don't treat them that way.....most consider them books for kids which adults can also enjoy.

Yeah the Harry Potter books definitely get much darker in tone in the second half of the series.

The movies deliberately reflected this in many ways, including in the opening Warner Bros. logo at the beginning of each movie.  They tend toward darker, colder, and more ominous coloring and construction as the series progresses.
