I never got into Friends.  I didn't get into Seinfeld until the last 3 seasons, but I loved it.  Does not hold up at all on a rewatch, but I think it's the case of it being very good, but mainly the first to do what it did.  You watch it now, it's hard to remember how formulaic everything was prior to that.  There were different formulas, but depending on which one you chose, it went one way.  That's how I feel about shows like Friends or Cheers.  They were very good at being very expected.

We actually started to rewatch the Simpsons, and I think it does ok as a rewatch.  The weird part there is where do you stop.  Seasons 1-3 are hit or miss, but Season 4 it's non stop bangers.  But do we just pretend it ends at like Season 10?

Oh man, The Simpsons are an American Institution. I started watching in 1989, and before that on the Tracy Ullman show. I probably watched every episode for the first 10-15 years but haven’t watched a “new” episode in its regular slot in 10-20 years. I can’t even tell you what day they come on. Not because I don’t like it, but because there are almost always reruns on all the time, at least several times daily.

In my opinion they are still making great episodes. 36 years and counting.

Man I haven't watched the Simpson in forever. Loved it as a kid. Remember thinking when I was in college that it had run its course. That was 28 years ago.

I catch current-season Simpsons episodes every now and then.  The kids like it so I'll watch with them.  It's not as great as it was in its first 6-10 seasons, but it's still better than 97.2% of what's on mainstream network television.

Yeah, pretty much.

It peaked in season 7.

We started the second season of Fallout yesterday before the NC kickoff and got 1 episode in.  I can't remember if that show has been mentioned here or not, but it's a very well-done adaptation on Prime of a popular video game.  The first season was very good, so I have high hopes for the second.

A lot of you probably wouldn't like it, but for those of you like apocalyptic sci-fi, it's a good show.

I love it!  Never played the games, but the series is a lot of fun.  We watched Season1 when it came out, and just started Season2 over the weekend.   I'll watch Walter goggins in absolutely anything he does.

I think it's interesting that on this thread, there are all sorts of people talking about new TV shows and new movies that they really like, whilst on the Grumpy thread, everyone's saying, "there's no good TV or movies anymore!"

Grumps gonna grump, I suppose.

Now get off my lawn!

I guess my take on that is that there are multiple "recent" TV shows that are as good as TV has ever been, but that the percentage of great TV is diluted by the sheer volume of shows being made on the old traditional broadcast and cable networks, plus the glut of streaming platforms making original content, most of which is garbage.

So, similar to music, it's not that great TV isn't out there, but you probably do have to dig harder for it than in days gone by.  Of course, "great TV" is likely to be subjective.

Movies.....I dunno.....it is way harder for movies to capture my attention the way they used to, and I like a lot of less of them than I used to, and my movie searching scope is exactly as wide as my TV scope, meaning everything from mainstream theater releases to original content produced on several streaming platforms we subscribe to.  It seems that in general, I have personally shifted in preference, gravitating toward stories that are given a long time to develop with many, many hours of character development.  Thus, TV series become preferable to 2 hr movies.

BUT, there still definitely are movies being made I enjoy.  Sometimes they're super good, and that to me is a great achievement, for any era.....making me care so much about the plight of characters I only just met and whose stories take place entirely within a couple of hours.

That's cool, but it's really a "you" thing so I don't think it would be fair for you to say something like, "Movies just aren't as good as they used to be" or "there are no good movies being made anymore."  Just because your preferences have changed, doesn't mean the industry has.

And I'm not really trying to single you out, I just see a lot of this sentiment from many posters here on the board, and from my viewpoint, it has more to do with them and their preferences or biases, than it does with the original art content being produced.

As for TV being diluted, I'm not sure I can agree with that.  The sheer amount of content is much much higher now than it was 3-4 decades ago, but I don't think the ratio of good-to-bad has changed all that much.

I have a pretty low opinion of where mainstream TV sat 3-4 decades ago, with so many bad shows from the 70s/80s/90s.  And my impression of it hasn't improved at all with all of the truly horribad shitty "reality" shows and "competition" shows that have proliferated since then.

So I don't think the ratio of good/bad has really changed all that much, and since the sheer volume has increased manyfold, it means the total amount of "good TV" being made, is actually much larger than it was in decades past.

Do you have to search harder for it since there are more than just 3 networks plus PBS like we had in the 70s?  Sure.  Does that mean it's not out there?  Of course not.

Matt Damon recently gave an interview saying that specifically when making moves for Netflix, they demand certain things like the main set piece occurring in the first act, to capture people, less people wanting a build.  And they want conversation that reiterates the plot multiple times in the movie, because people are on their phones, and only half paying attention.

Obviously Netflix is different, because they don't care about captive audiences in a theater, but as they acquire more studios, they will become the norm, more than the exception.

Yup I can definitely see this.

But this isn't the fault of the studios, it's the fault of the idiot public constantly tethered to their phones and incapable of paying attention to anything for more than 22 seconds.

I love my i s c & a aggie wife dearly, but she likes to watch TV while scrolling on her phone or playing Candy Crush or whatever the latest game is.

Then sometimes she misses something in a show and asks me to rewind.  I'm sure you can imagine my reaction.
