Stars Wars (it's not "A New Hope" to me, get off my lawn")
Empire
Return
Force Awakens
Rogue One
Sith
Clones/Phantom (tossup for me and I don't really care because they're by far the worst of the franchise IMO)

I generally agree, but I would put Rogue One and Force Awakens above Return of the Jedi.  I think the ewoks were a bit corny.

I agree even though Jedi was the first movie I ever went to without parents.

For me it is:
  • Empire
  • Star Wars (I'm with Utee on naming here)
  • Rogue One
  • Force Awakens
  • Jedi
  • Sith
  • Clones
  • Phantom

I thought the first half of Star Wars is awesome and holds up really well.  The actiony parts and special effects look pretty dates now.  But they are worlds ahead of the prequels, which functions as the movie version of Ambien.

The shame is, the story overall of the prequels, and the way he made everything come together is really cool.

The dialogue is awful, they overused CGI at a time it couldn't be used like that, and it was badly miscast.

I think it would be impossible to do, but with a total remake, using the same general storyline, those movies could be really good.

Agreed, the storyline had potential.  Ditching Jar Jar would have helped tremendously, too.

I've watched edits of the prequels that were quite a bit better. Generally they remove all the corny toilet humor, and eliminate Jar Jar wherever possible.

One of them dubbed in an alien voice for Jar Jar, and viewers had to read the subtitles in order to follow his dialogue. That alone made a tremendous difference; just shutting him up altogether.

That's sorta the problem though. With the OG Trilogy, fans generally don't care for the Special Edition edits, and want the original cuts released. (Greedo shoots first, the awful Jabba song, and so forth)

With the Prequels, the original cuts are essentially unwatchable, and they get quite a bit better when someone edits the ever living crap out of them.

I can't think of anything in the sequel re-releases that improved, other than some of the technical stuff.  Jabba in Mos Eisley, Palpatine screaming as he falls, more wampa face)  It's all bad

Heh, the best part of the Jabba in Mos Eisley scene was the miraculous Resurrection of Greedo.

Star Wars has a kind of helmet status, and we're discussing the 'why?' behind it:  people care so much for these movies that if a bad one comes out, they fix it.  They take time and effort to improve it and share it out.

I'm sure there's a small army of people who do this for any ole movie, but it's a large army that cares this much about Star Wars.  If the next Avengers movie sucks, mostly people will just say so and go on about their business.  There probably wouldn't be an online team of nerds spanning a dozen countries coordinating an effort to make it great.

Heh, when the Planet of the Apes TV series was cancelled, they made like five TV movies out of the footage that are still shown periodically to this day as if they were just one of the original movies.

I kind of wish that someone would do that with the Sarah Connor Chronicles. It wasn't quite good enough to rewatch two entire seasons, but there is certainly enough footage to piece together a pretty mean feature length film or two. Not sure how you'd end it though, as it was cancelled after a rather tantalizing cliff hanger.

How much of a bump (if any) does Rogue One get for giving us the best Darth Vader scene of the entire franchise?

Pretty big.  I rewatched it last weekend, and as much as I enjoy it, if you told me I had to leave out just the last three minutes, I'm not sure how often I would rewatch it.
