OTHER NOTES
2002
  • 12 game season allowed due to extra week in between Labor Day and Thanksgiving that would have otherwise forced two bye weeks per team
  • Option for PAT penalties to be enforced on the ensuing kickoff, rather than the reception, and on change of play, when the ball is spotted, not when snapped
  • After a 3-2 start, USC won 8 in a row, to begin a streak where they won 45 of 46 and two national championships; with only a 2004 upset loss to Cal preventing the 2006 Rose Bowl against Texas to also
  • Protection rule implemented to allow auto-bid conferences to still get the 2nd place team from their conference, after the Rose Bowl lost Iowa to the Orange Bowl
  • Ohio State beat Miami in the Fiesta Bowl to end the Canes 34 game losing streak, which was the longest major college winning streak since Oklahoma from 1953-1957, and in the FBS since Toledo from 1969-1971
2003
  • Halo rule eliminated
  • Army was first 0-13 team in college football history
  • Final split championship, after USC finished #1 in the AP Poll, but was #3 in the BCS, and left out of the Sugar Bowl

These were both sneaky good seasons.  I voted 2003 almost solely due to what I still think is the best weekend of college football ever (October 9-11)

We had the rare Thursday night SEC game with South Carolina beating Kentucky

Friday night #18 TCU held off USF 13-10, and #20 Michigan came back from down 21 points in the 4th quarter to beat #17 Minnesota, in a game moved up due to the Twins having a playoff game Saturday.

Then Saturday, I actually think Gameday did a split host because there were so many big games...

  • #2 Miami beat #5 Florida State in Tallahassee
  • #1 Oklahoma slaughtered #11 Texas in the RRS
  • Notre Dame upset #15 Pitt on the road
  • Clemson upset #25 Virginia 30-27
  • Auburn upset #7 Arkansas 10-3 in Fayetteville
  • #8 Georgia won on the road at #14 Tennessee
  • Florida upset #6 LSU 19-7 in Death Valley
  • Missouri upset #10 Nebraska in Lincoln
  • Oklahoma State upset #22 Kansas State
  • #23 Wisconsin ended #3 Ohio State's 19 game winning streak, and 10 game Big Ten winning streak, 17-10
  • Arizona State hammered an Oregon team coming off an upset of Michigan, 59-14

5 games between ranked teams, 11 ranked teams losing, only 3 of which were in true road games
